HEALTH CARE: Reason to distrust legislation

Re: “Bipartisan plan would give school employees health care equity” (Viewpoint, 3-21).

You can’t blame teachers if they don’t believe state Sens. Steve Hobbs and Steve Litzow when they try to assure them that they will have more pocket money if their health care legislation passes.

Hobbs and Litzow are sponsors of the health-care takeover bill that restricts bargaining health care as it moves every school employee to one statewide plan. This action appears to come straight from a playbook that politicians across the country are subscribing to, a playbook that seeks to restrict all collective bargaining rights for public employees, a playbook that wants unions only to be a part of school history books.

This is their real agenda. Their health-care legislation is not about helping teachers and support staff at all. When was the last time anything out of Olympia enhanced working conditions for school employees?

So pardon us for not trusting any bill that takes more rights away from union contracts. By piecemealing the takeaways, such as evaluation and health care, legislators seem to be hoping that union members will behave like the frog in a pot of slowly boiling water. This way we might remain complacent until it’s too late, as all bargaining rights are finally stripped away.

In this current economic climate. when union members are being blamed for nearly everything wrong in our country, we are wise to be distrustful of any legislation that takes more rights away, especially when it is being sold as a gain.

    Where Sen. Hobbs is concerned, I suspect this is more pay back for the union’s support of Dave Schmidt, than an effort to improve either the state’s bottom line or employees health care costs.
