WASHAM: Put the blame on ill-informed voters

Re: “Washam doesn’t respond to request to step down” (TNT, 3-21).

Who can deny that Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer Dale Washam has failed to do the job he was elected to do?

But a big part of the Washam disaster has not been addressed. Who is actually responsible for him being in his position? The answer is the ill-informed, careless voters of Pierce County who voted for this incompetent who has now cost us a million dollars in wasted taxes to pay for his mistakes.

The News Tribune must share in the blame for the Washam mistake. He was not an unknown to the political parties or activists when he ran. Most were familiar with the irrational and delusional behavior he had displayed for years. All the TNT reporters had to do was ask. Your political columnist has even admitted he voted for Washam.

I am sure many self-righteous county citizens are shaking their heads in agreement with the pronouncements of the Pierce County Council, but let us not forget who voted this unfit person into office in the first place.

At this point the best we can hope for is that as Washam disappears from office next year is that the voters have learned to find out about the candidate they vote for and The News Tribune will concern itself more with a candidates qualifications for office rather than the “horse race.”

  1. PumainTacoma says:

Your so called “ill informed voters” should check out the data from the county and do their own analysis showing disparities in similar situated properties, views, size, value, neighborhoods and then discover the names behind those disparities to disclose the full view of the past practices of “cushing your friends, politicians, and commercial owners property taxes.”

  2. i was highly disturbed that the TNT chose to run the expose on washam immediately AFTER the election. by keeping their story under wraps; they implicitly withheld evidence and vital information from the community, and thus acted as a cover-up agency of advocates and proponents for washam and all of his untoward actions, until his election was complete and his legal fees would be covered by us taxpayers. shame on callaghan and his ilk for their miscarriage of justice.

the shame is that the TNT only cares about it’s own bottom line. they just want a recurring story for the front-page. if they were interested in the business of relaying vital news to their customers, they would have been active in shining a light on washam before his election made his legal fees the responsibility of us readers and constituents.
