Re: “Catholic women must speak out about birth control” (TNT, 2-24).

The opinion article by Maura Casey was great. Another point that could be made why those in the pews should let their voices be heard goes back to the Second Vatican Council called by the great Pope John XXIII.

One of the significant theological messages emanating from that council was that God lives in the people, not just the pope or bishops or priests. Therefore, if we want to discover the voice of God, we need to hear from the laity.

The fact that 98 percent of Catholic women in the U.S. have used birth control is a powerful statement, especially since God lives in them, too.

  1. One of the worst things that happened to the Church is the long life of John Paul II who, fearing totalitarian Nazi and Communist regimes, imposed an autocratic style that stopped many of the more democratic urges brought about by Vatican II.

What many don’t realize is that, just because a Pope issues a teaching, it isn’t necessarily fall under the definition of infallible teachings – in fact there have been very, very few ever issued. There has never been an infallible teaching regarding contraception nor abortion.

And, most conservative, authoritarian Catholics overlook the very important part that individual conscience plays within Catholic moral teachings. The clergy cannot impose a non-infallible moral teaching upon the laity if the laity does not accept it.

So – based upon the teachings of the Church regarding individual conscience and infallibility – it is clear that the teachings regarding contraception have been thoroughly rejected by the body of the Church and thus is an inauthentic teaching.
