ARENA: Taxpayers will end up paying

You have a very bright editorial staff, who endorsed the latest Seattle arena proposal, asking, “What’s not to like?” (TNT, 2-21).

You say: “Taxpayers wouldn’t be asked to come up with a dime for any of it.” And “The remainder of the $500 million cost would be paid by team rent and taxes generated by the arena.”

Moreover, you quote King County Executive Dow Constantine as saying, “Only two other pro-sports arenas in the country would have more private investment.”

If taxpayers won’t be asked to come up with a dime, how could any sports arena have “more” private investment, and why are taxes part of the funding package?

These kind of word games are why no one trusts politicians and why people are starting to distrust their local newspaper.

If some people want to build a sports arena, they should do so. The government has more important things to do and shouldn’t be finding new ways to funnel money into the pockets of rich people.

  1. It’s amazing the have laid of city and county employees do to budget short falls but he have 200 million to put into an arena.I also like how the use the it will create jobs card. Which I never seen job adds when they use it

  2. No professional team wants to come to Washington; it’s a beautiful state, just not a sports friendly state.

@Romulan…please do your homework, Seattle has consistently been in the top 10 for NFL ticket sales. The Sounders lead the MLS in Ticket Sales. Seattle has a D-League basketball team that pulls a better than average attendance. The Storm lead the WNBA in ticket sales.

Don’t believe them when they say it won’t costs the public a penny. Not true, or even possible. These guys are pros at reaping private profits from public expenditures. The investors have enough money to build it with their own dollars, but it’s better for them if we pay for some of it and they get to keep all the profits.
