CHAMBERS BAY: Look at the success story

The article on Chambers Bay golf course continuing to lose money (TNT, 2-18) could actually have been headlined “Chambers Bay reducing debt.” The statistics you provided from 2010 to 2011 actually showed a decrease in the course’s deficit and increase in its revenue.

It’s all how you present it, and many people continue to predict, or wish for, the failure of this venture. The sole Pierce County Council member who voted against it is quoted as criticizing the golf course once again. No new news there.

The real news is the stunning success of the entire Chambers property. The dog park is heavily frequented by animal lovers. The children’s playground is packed with parents and kids. Beach lovers can hike over the bridge to a pristine waterfront. Kite-flyers, frisbee experts and families with picnics can enjoy the large meadow. The walking trails are packed after the workday and on the weekends.

And yes, golfers from the county can enjoy reduced golf rates at a world- class facility. In fact, the only venue that actually provides revenue is the golf course.

To view the success of this area, one only has to observe the thousands of people using all the facilities on a nice day. And be glad someone had the vision to start it with a golf course.

There is no better place for the County to spend a little tax money than Chambers Creek Regional Park, which includes Chambers Bay Golf Course. Spending a little to make up the difference between what the Golf Course earns and what is necessary to pay off the bonds is small potatoes compared to the improved quality of life for all the people who use the park golfing or otherwise.
Sour grapes always comes from those who are losers.

Anytime I see a park full of people I know we’ve spent money well.

Nice to know the deficit has been reduced. As soon as this facility was built and started running water, our water pressure had been reduced. Also, from someone in the know some of the $$$ has come from the Sewer money… This was someone’s (and we know who’s) baby, but it has taken something from may of us to take care of this baby!

Maybe, just maybe WAY down the road this will be a success…but, I have a feeling it will be long after many of us are gone!

  4. Jeffrey Camm, University Place The county could have had the same result without the Golf course… But do you really think kids playing at the park, people picnicing & walking along the beach is going to repay the debts to the county & pay the employees of the golf course? That’s what the council person really worried about
