The article on Chambers Bay golf course continuing to lose money (TNT, 2-18) could actually have been headlined “Chambers Bay reducing debt.” The statistics you provided from 2010 to 2011 actually showed a decrease in the course’s deficit and increase in its revenue.
It’s all how you present it, and many people continue to predict, or wish for, the failure of this venture. The sole Pierce County Council member who voted against it is quoted as criticizing the golf course once again. No new news there.
The real news is the stunning success of the entire Chambers property. The dog park is heavily frequented by animal lovers. The children’s playground is packed with parents and kids. Beach lovers can hike over the bridge to a pristine waterfront. Kite-flyers, frisbee experts and families with picnics can enjoy the large meadow. The walking trails are packed after the workday and on the weekends.
And yes, golfers from the county can enjoy reduced golf rates at a world- class facility. In fact, the only venue that actually provides revenue is the golf course.
To view the success of this area, one only has to observe the thousands of people using all the facilities on a nice day. And be glad someone had the vision to start it with a golf course.
