I am writing as a concerned citizen, small business owner and Tacoma resident regarding news that the Hotel Murano owner is delaying construction of the Marriott Residence Inn proposed for the Thea Foss Waterway by pursuing a shoreline permit appeal to the Washington Supreme Court.
Admittedly I have a personal stake in this subject. When construction begins, my café, which is adjacent to the site, will see an increase in business. But I have modest goals: to meet my obligations and pay myself and my employees a living wage.
We are just a small part of a much bigger picture. The other restaurant in our building would like to see more visitors to Dock Street. What about the construction company and the idle workers who have been waiting for this project to start?
How many new jobs will be created when the hotel is open for business? Empty retail spaces abut the site on both sides. How many new businesses could get their start with a hotel as an attraction for customers?
What could the ripple effect be? More development and new businesses mean the vision of a vital, modern Tacoma waterfront could become a reality. Continued delays could mean less chance of construction, less development and more failed businesses.
I do not understand the motives of the Murano owner, KS Tacoma. This case has been turned down on multiple levels. The Murano owner should drop this case and allow development of Tacoma’s waterfront to move forward.
