Re: “Washam’s legal frays cost county treasure” (TNT, 1-30).
It is appalling that an elected official cannot be held personally responsible for his incompetence. Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer Dale Washam is the poster child for someone who is not qualified for the position, and the taxpayers will be paying for his personal shortcomings for years.
It is shameful that he does not have to personally pay the costs for employment practice settlements, legal fees and the investigations.
It is indeed unfortunate that the recall failed to obtain sufficient valid signatures. With many county employees already laid off, or facing a layoff due to budget shortfalls, the waste of money related to the assessor-treasurer is shocking and, simply put, unacceptable.
If Washam had any honor, he would immediately resign. However, his arrogance will probably not allow him to do the decent thing, so all Pierce County taxpayers will share the privilege of paying for his continuing personal vendetta against his predecessor, Ken Madsen, and the honest, hard-working staff in the assessor’s office.
Washam should do all county residents a favor and resign. We cannot afford him.
