LAKEWOOD: Repeal sewer ‘franchise fee’

Letter by Anton J. Miller, Lakewood on Jan. 26, 2012 at 10:31 am with 3 Comments »

Thanks to state Sen. Mike Carrell (Viewpoint, 1-26) for trying to repeal the “franchise fee” imposed last year by Pierce County on Lakewood sewer ratepayers.

That “fee” is an unlawful tax which will, in due course, be struck down by a class-action lawsuit, if not legislatively abolished. Lakewood ratepayers will wind up paying attorneys fees, but at least Pierce County Councilman Dick Muri, at whose urging the fee was imposed, will be held accountable.

Remember this when John Ladenburg runs for state office.

He proposed, directed, and took $30-million dollars from the Pierce County Sewer funds to build a golf course that he selfishly wanted on prime waterfront land.

Now, it sits there many years later unable to sustain itself, break even, and will never pay back that money with interest it lost. We all pay higher sewer rates because of him; some people in Pierce County still do not have a sewer connection.

I don’t like this tax either. They did it because they could.

  3. Mr. Miller, a former lawyer who resigned from the bar, already challenged this in court. He lost.
