OBAMA: Job picture is on the upswing

Letter by John Laakso, Fircrest on Jan. 24, 2012 at 11:50 am with 40 Comments »

Re: “Gingrich right with ‘food stamp’ label” (letter, 1-24).

The writer criticizing President Obama’s economic record was incorrect in his assertions about Obama’s record on unemployment. The actual unemployment rate in January 2009, when Obama took office, was 7.8 percent, not 6.8.

As the Great Recession that began under President Bush gained momentum in early 2009, the rate increased and peaked at 10 percent in October 2009 – a 28 percent increase. Not until May 2010 did the unemployment rate reach a level significantly below the upper 9 percent level. But a second Great Depression was averted.

Since August of 2011, the jobless rate has been falling steadily and is now at 8.5 percent. The expectation is that it will continue to drop. By contrast, during the Bush presidency, unemployment started at 4.2 percent and eventually rose to 7.8 percent – an 86 percent increase.

As for federal debt ($15 trillion, not $16 trillion), the baseline deficit had reached about $1 trillion a year by the time Bush left office due to two unfunded wars, an unfunded Medicare drug plan, the second Bush recession and an unfunded “bailout” program.

About half of the recent growth in the federal debt was due to the continuation of these programs. In addition, the Obama administration and Congress enacted programs to stop and begin to reverse the effects of the recession.

I would like to hear more from Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich about how they would revitalize the American economy instead of the mutual attacks on each other and the president.

Wonderful letter…….Here is a clue to those who want to stake out their political territory. go ahead—but, like this letter writer come armed with FACTS…….Spin is just a waste of everyone’s time. As I said in a previous response to another letter—-if you are going to call our President a marxist—prove it. give me examples.. This writer came to the table armed with the most powerful weapon; KNOWLEDGE. He supported his argument with real facts……..You want to be a name caller—hit the elementary school playground. Grown-ups argue facts……………….This letter was supported by someone who did his homework and behaved intelligently…….What a breath of fresh air—thank you!

Good article on how BHO is cooking the books in regards to unemployment stats.

And Bush spending too much does not justify BHO spending even more

  3. stumpy567 says:

Lets go ahead and place all the blame on Bush.

It was Bush that made Obama spend the first year of office
pushing “Obamacare” down everyone’s throat instead of paying attention to the economy.

It was Bush that caused the Democratic party not to pass a budget but instead use their majority in the senate to play political games.

It was Bush that convinced the Obama administration to dump our taxpayer’s 500 million in Solyndra.

Don’t be rediculous. Place blame where it rests.
This president’s agenda is rooted in the “Acorn” mindset.
These aren’t assertions they are facts.

Yes, the last year of Bush’s spending was huge. The financial crisis drove that. Oh, and let’s not forget who took control of the nation’s purse in 2006.

The rest of his spending was high, but a drop in the bucket compared to BHO.

  5. “Don’t be rediculous. Place blame where it rests.”

    Okay!

A lot of the blame belongs to McConnell, Boehner and Cantor! Maybe not all, but a whole lot. At least since President Obama was sworn into office. Before that it was all Georges Bush’s fault.

“These aren’t assertions they are facts.”

  6. concernedtacoma7 says:

Muck- why so childish today? Your man Harry just presided over the least productive Senate in modern history. Not really a bad thing given this admin, but a budget would be nice.

Bush could motivate and compromise with dems to get a budget passed. BHO lacks the leadership of Bush.

  7. taxedenoughintacoma says:

You blind and dumb obama lovers will still be supporting this thing of a president when we are ALL standing in the breadline.

time for obummer to go, next!

  8. taxedenoughintacoma says:

After killing the Keysstone XL pipeline deal obummer can never say again that he is a “job creator”. He is a “job destroyer”.

  9. The “great recession” started under a congress and senate controlled by democrats. Bush was a lame duck bi-partisan at that point.

The “jobless rate” is a very elusive number, as demonstrated by Obama’s monthly corrections.

Still waiting to hear from someone who is SMART enough to do more than spin………Three different states have environmental issues with this pipeline that run through THEIR land……..Again, do your homework or respect someone who wrote a letter based on FACTS………Most of what I hear is more name-calling based on what?????The market has gone for 7000 to over 12,000 with President Obama……..I can add and subtract–can you???

  11. It’s called inflation.

  12. hansgruber says:

Gee, to bad unemployement went up in Pierce County in Decemeber.

The county’s jobless rate rose to 9.1 percent last month from a revised 8.5 percent jobless rate in November.

Those states all have pipeline running through them already. This is political, not about the environment.

Actually the Obama Administration claimed the recession ended in June 2009:
The NBER said Monday that the recession which began in December 2007 ended in June 2009, which marked the beginning of an expansion.

The National debt stands at $15.236 Trillion, $4.61 Trillion increase since Obama took office (Bush increased the debt $4.889 Trillion in 8 years). Obama has increased spending and borrowing continuing the “unfunding” of our government and continues to blame it on he previous President.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Don’t look now, but the bank bailout is starting to turn a profit.
The Treasury Department announced Wednesday that the money it gave to banks during the financial crisis has been paid back, and then some.

  16. aislander says:

    Thanks for the laughs, Laakso!

And, again: I thought menopause meant “no more periods,” but apparently you found a LOT of them…

  17. Indeed!

  18. citizendoe says:

HA! John did you use the term actual unemployment rate….Just the same rhetoric BS.

  19. menopaws says:

    Who is John Laasko??????

  20. You blind and dumb Obama haters will still be complaining about this president when we are ALL celebrating his reelection.

Time for Obama to WIN AGAIN!

  21. So much for refraining from namecalling.

  22. WHOA! Hold on there SPeters, you icon of fairness that you are… I copied the words above from your pal (and mine) taxedenoughintacoma, who wrote…

    JAN. 24, 2012 AT 3:57 PM
“You blind and dumb obama lovers will still be supporting this thing of a president when we are ALL standing in the breadline.”

“time for obummer to go, next!”

I only changed a few words. SO WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM! Are you saying that taxed… was not name-calling, because you didn’t make any comments about his post in any of the 5 comments you posted after his.

    Are you a hypocrite SPeters?

  23. You engaged in namecalling, not me. You can justify it all you like. Just because someone else does it, doesn’t mean you have to follow suit. I have never seen taxedenough complain about namecalling, you however…

I suggest that if you’re going to prance around lecturing people about namecalling, that to avoid being a hypocrite you either STOP the lectures or STOP the namecalling.

Same goes for off topic comments.

  24. ct7- Why so childish today (on the other thread)? Your man Mitch is presiding over the most obstructionist Senate Minority ever. Using the filibuster and cloture more than ever in the entire history of the U.S. Senate. Trying to defeat the president in the next election is one thing, but a budget would be nice.

President Obama was able to motivate Democrats and compromise with Republicans to get a Healthcare Reform passed. Romney, Gingrich and the others lack the leadership of President Obama to do anything like that.

  25. What a joke! People are so mindless, and so gullible while they get lead around by the nose!

The economy is CYCLICAL! It has NOTHING to do with a sitting President, whether it is good or bad. It goes up, then it drops, then it rights itself again…back and forth, up and down.

This time it began its drop (which was long expected) during the last administration, and its beginning its climb under this one. And guaranteed, when it climbs, whoever is at the helm (in this case Jimmy Carter Jr.) will take full credit for it.

  26. President Obama was able to motivate Democrats and compromise with Republicans to get a Healthcare Reform passed

You may want to check the facts on that one friend. LMAO… especially considering the letter today that was loaded with false premises.

Tell ya what, I’ll check it for ya ;)

    House
    219 democrats AYE

    34 democrats NO

    0 republicans AYE

    178 republicans NO

    ROFLMAO.

I’ll let you look up the senate vote.

  27. ==== crickets ====

  28. CBS poll shows President Obama has received a 91% Approval Rating for the proposals he gave in his State of the Union Message on 1/24/20012.

    91% APPROVAL RATE!!!

  29. correction: 2012 (typo 20012)

  30. Pacman33 says:

    “91% APPROVAL RATE!!!”

What is the relevancy of an approval figure based on a steaming pile of lies?

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/story/2012-01-24/obama-sotu-fact-check/52782502/1?loc=interstitialskip

Maybe that there are too many individuals that have no regard for the relevancy of fact or truth, like yourself? Those who live in a universe in which there is no objective reality; a universe where truth is relative and their feelings are all that matter. And even their feelings, by any objective standard, are completely dysfunctional.

  31. LOL Pac.

  32. “91% APPROVAL RATE!!!” for President Obama’s State of the Union proposals!

Pacman grumbles: “What is the relevancy of an approval figure…”

It means 91 out of 100 people polled believe President Obama is telling the truth and being honest, and do like what he has proposed.

It also means 9 out of 100 people either don’t like what President Obama is proposing, or like you Pac…, they might think he may be lying.

In means that, you Pacman are outvoted by MORE THAN 10 to 1.

It means President Obama will more than likely be re-elected!

Now do you understand Pacman, or do you need a picture?

  33. Actually, that’s not what the poll suggests. But you knew that.

  34. menopaws says:

One thing people know about President Obama. He is NOT a liar……….No WMD, no nuclear drum beating, no oil revenues paying for the war in Iraq……….He doesn’t lie and he isn’t stupid………Game, set , match…….Mitt Romney is so wooden he needs to be sprayed for carpenter ants, Newt Gingrich finds truth to be something you change and manipulate, depending on your audience…….Rick Santorum, well I lived In Pa. when he was Senator–he lost by 18 points……..Enough said……Ron Paul–he is truthful…….Credit should be given–but even if you do agree with him and his philosophy–he’s too old……..The Presidency is not for people over age 70—Reagan showed signs of his Altzheimers in his last term, sad, but true. Our country can’t afford that anymore…….Those who loath Obama, so be it……But, he is NOT a liar and that is a big deal to sensible people.

  35. Did you get a chance to look up the senate vote yet muckibr??? you icon of accuracy you.

  36. google obama lies. You will appear to be less ignorant.

    BTW, is GITMO still open?

  37. Google “Republican lies”, YOU WILL BE ASTOUNDED BY THE MASSIVE VOLUME OF HITS!!!

  38. Ok, I’ll answer… Yes GITMO is still open. One example of many broken promises from the one.

  39. Name ALL the broken promises SPeters. Bet you can’t!

  40. True, there’s sooo many.
