TAXES: Income tax would be more equitable

With the governor’s request for a sales tax increase, isn’t it about time to reconsider our tax base? For a multitude of reasons, we should change to a graduated income tax.

Boeing projects increasing production of 737 aircraft in Renton to 40 per month. My reading of the sales tax exemption list indicates no sales tax will be collected on them. None. The exemption list for businesses is long and comprehensive.

Besides being fairer, an income tax is also deductible from federal income taxes. Limited deductions keep all rates low. If a business isn’t profitable, taxpayers should not subsidize it.

It’s past time to consider shifting the tax burdens from those least able to avoid them.
