TACOMA: Mayor doesn’t need to apologize

Letter by William F. Johnston, Tacoma on Dec. 6, 2011 at 12:42 pm with 21 Comments »
December 6, 2011 2:57 pm

Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland owes no one an apology over her remarks on race – especially not the Republican Party.

Richard Nixon developed the “Southern Strategy” for his 1968 run for president. It was designed to do nothing but use white resentment against blacks to win votes for Republicans. In the 1964 elections, the Republicans had won only the anti-civil rights states in the south, but Republicans learned how to use racism against the Democrats.

The “solid” Republican South today is built by Republican politicians who have campaigned against any further progress in civil rights. Today, that campaign is obviously being pushed by Republicans not only against blacks but Hispanics as well.

Since the 2010 election Republican governors and legislatures across the country have introduced “mini-Jim Crow” legislation designed to make it more difficult for minorities to register and vote.

The Republican Party cannot ignore or deny its history and today it is no longer “the party of Lincoln.” Republicans protest, saying ”We are not a racist party.” But, if it walks like a duck, looks like a duck and quacks like a duck – it’s a duck!

How low have we’ve gone when even our unethical mayor can’t apologize if not to the citizens than to the PLU student and his parents who she “tracked” down to have a chat with? Sad day for ethical leadership in Tacoma.

  2. taxedenoughintacoma says:

The writer of this letter only enables the bad behavior of our mayor. She should apologize for her divisive statements.

Our public officals will never stop making such statements if we don’t hold them all to the same level of decency.

Let’s all demand our elected officals play fair.

  3. sandblower says:

    Crybabies. The truth hurts sometimes.

  4. ilikepie says:

Mr. Johnston has the right to comment but not the right to rewrite history. From the very beginning Democrats have been racists. Mr. Johnston has no facts to back up his assertion about Nixon or the Republicans today. FDR included a segregated “Blacks Only” division for WWII in order to protect White soldiers, stating the “Blacks were expendable.” Mr. Johnston must not be from the south, as most Southern States are Democrat-States.
Tacoma Mayor cannot alienate her constituency by proclaiming such statements. She only continues the division of people everywhere.

  5. taxedenoughintacoma says:

    ilikepie,
love your handle (ilikepie) and your comment. Well said. I look forward to more from you.

  6. concernedtacoma7 says:

Who is the author quoting when he says “mini-Jim crow”?

How hard is it to prove who you are when voting? Is the left so racist they believe blacks and Hispanics cannot get an ID?

Our mayor is disgusting and nothing she does should or will be excused by those who see how bad she is for Tacoma.

  7. TSkidmore says:

Oh the Right wing Nuts deny history – The Southern Strategy is a fact – The South – “Democratic”? Not anymore! Fox Noise viewers one and all – a FACT: Fox Noise viewer know less about events than those who watch no news at all. The only thing the Mayor did wrong is that she backed down at all…she told the truth and should have stood by it!

  8. scooter6139 says:

    ilikepie,

Maybe it would be easier for you to understand how comparing democrats and republican now to what they were 50 to 100 years ago is impossible. It would be better to state these two sides as progressive and conservative. Republicans haven’t always been conservative nor have democrats always been more progressive. 100 years ago there were other dynamics at play and the Republicans of 100 years ago were the progressive/liberal party. Lincoln today would be a moderate to progressive Democrat. Today’s republican party looks nothing like the republican party of the post Civil War ere. In fact it looks nothing like the republican party of the 40’s and 50’s.

  9. Vox_clamantis_in_deserto says:

So… it’s okay for our mayor to label all Republicans racist… because of a strategy employed by a sleaze-bag candidate in 1968?

    Okey dokey.

Then her honor will have no objection to my calling all democrats racist for their civil rights abuses prior to 1968.

Oh, and if you want to call Lincoln a modern-day Democrat, you might as well throw Nixon in too. He was hardly a conservative, and you will recall he
    – imposed wage and price controls,
    – indexed Social Security for inflation,
    – created Supplemental Security Income,
    – created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
    – created Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA),
    – promoted the Legacy of parks program,
    – implemented the Philadelphia Plan, the first significant federal affirmative action program,
    – dramatically improved salaries for US federal employees worldwide,
    – signed a bill that lowered the maximum U.S. speed limit to 55 miles per hour to conserve gasoline during the 1973 energy crisis,
    – established the Office of Minority Business Enterprise,
    – and he introduced the Comprehensive Health Insurance Act, which would have mandated employers to purchase health insurance for their employees. And in addition, the act provided a federal health plan like Medicaid that any American could join by paying on a sliding scale based on income.

So, if you’re going to steal Lincoln, you gotta’ take Nixon – and his Southern Strategy too.

  10. alindasue says:

Lincoln, like Nixon, was a moderate who appealed to voters from both parties. However, looking at today’s politics, even Ronald Reagan would be considered a moderate. I miss the days when both parties would at least TRY (or pretend to try) to appeal to those of us in the middle.

  11. beerBoy says:

These playground taunts from those that favor either side of the same coin are getting tiresome.

    The Mayor’s comments were stupid.
    The Republoyalist comments are stupid.
    The Demopologist comments are stupid.

  12. harleyrider1 says:

Disagree. Any elected leader takes an oath of office and part of that oath is to represent everyone.

A leader leads by example. A leader inspires us to be be better. Bitter people who disguise their long-held racists beliefs we don’t need and it is our fault that she was elected – this time,

  13. RW98512 says:

“Mr. Johnston must not be from the south, as most Southern States are Democrat-States.”

Thus all the red state votes in 2008.

Someone missed 1970, 80, 90 and the first decade of 2000s

It does appear, though that this comment acknowledges racism in the South, which is a step in the Right (pardon the pun) direction.

  14. RW98512 says:

“Any elected leader takes an oath of office and part of that oath is to represent everyone.”

So all those elected officials calling Obama a “socialist” and an “illegal alien”….? How’s that for bitterness?

  15. RW98512 says:

From someone that actually lived during Nixon’s Adminitration:

The wage and price freeze was a wage freeze. How could prices be controlled? They couldn’t, but employers, including this newspaper, were quick to tell negotiating union members that they couldn’t talk about wage increases.

“- indexed Social Security for inflation,
    – created Supplemental Security Income,
    – created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
    – created Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)”

It’s nice to know that Conservatives oppose COLA for Social Security, health and safety in the community and workplace. Now if they’d only admit to that while campaigning.

“- dramatically improved salaries for US federal employees worldwide”
With a wage freeze? Fishing in a pond with no fish.

“- and he introduced the Comprehensive Health Insurance Act, which would have mandated employers to purchase health insurance for their employees.” Quite similar to the idea that the Republicans had before Obama came up with health care reform.

  16. BlaineCGarver says:

I’ve never seen so many ASSumed facts from the Lefties in a long, long time. BoBo started a class/race war awhile back and the trend is catching, I see.

  17. Brilliant response. I’m sure it was well researched

  18. TSkidmore says:

“BoBo”? Wasn’t that a gorilla at Woodland Park for years…looks like “BlaineC” can’t even hide his racism for a minute…good Republicon that he is.

No one has pointed out good old Ronnie Reagan announced his campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi…location of one of the brutal murder of three civil rights workers in 1963. Add a little symbolism to the racism as well.

  19. beerBoy says:

BoBo started a class/race war awhile back and the trend is catching, I see.

Golly Charlie….have you been listening to the secret meanings hidden in the song Helter Skelter?

  20. LarryFine says:

One thing is for sure… the mayor was never hooked on phonics, She totally butchered the pronunciations of names at the council meeting Tuesday night.

  21. stumpy567 says:

The legislation to “make it harder to vote” requires valid ID to vote.
I have been asked for ID at the polls for as long as I can remember.
Mabe we should bring back Acorn so you can manipulate elections the way you used to.
If you want to proclaim racisim you need to look in the mirror.
