PIERCE COUNTY: $730,000 for a boat? Here’s another idea

So the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department wants $730,000 to purchase a new boat for homeland security and patrol purposes.

I would like to propose a less expensive solution to the County Council: cannons!

They can be purchased at any Army-Navy surplus outlet and at a considerably lower price tag than the boat.

My plan would be to strategically place these cannons along Pierce County’s 235 miles of saltwater shoreline. A voluntary citizens militia will be trained to operate them in the event the county is ever invaded by terrorists.

    What does that make Sam?

  2. I think its a great idea…..I’ll volunteer…..and I’ll turn those suckers on everyone firing off illegal fireworks next July! :)

  3. I think maybe Sam was just being sarcastic.

whatever happened to military surplus? Can’t we find an older patrol boat from the DOD and use it? And wasn’t the lost boat insured?

Good point, cargilekm. There has to be an old boat sitting on a trailer somewhere that the Sheriff’s Department could make do with. Would it be perfect or state-of-the-art? No, but it would work. I think the county “self-insures” most equipment, which means they forego the expense of commercial insurance and pay for losses out of pocket with the savings.

  6. This is just another example of how our government works when it comes to our money, the taxpayer. To the gov. there is an unlimited source of funds from we over taxed citizens. We have 1986 and 1992 automobiles, when one breaks we have to fix it ourselves(thank God we can). The thought of the county paying so much for a boat is beyond belief. I know for a fact that they could do the same job for a 10th. the cost but why should they when “our” money is always accesible to them. As I explained to a friend: You never own a home, even after it’s paid off, because if you don’t pay your prohibitive property tax they just take your home. It is time for our government to live within their means like we have to do, like that will ever happen:(
