TACOMA: Smitherman is a brilliant leader

As a speech/language pathologist, I had the privilege of working beside Tacoma City Council candidate Karen Smitherman at Rogers Elementary School 25 years ago. A reading specialist at that time, she demonstrated professionalism, enthusiasm and dedication to each student, which had a profound impact on my professional development. I wanted to be just like her.

When my daughter attended Tacoma School of the Arts, I was thrilled that Smitherman helped lead that school. She is exactly the mentor I wanted for my child, and she did just that.

Smitherman had been mentored by the best, none other than Jane Russell. It is no wonder that she was named Lyon Elementary School Teacher of the Year. The woman is a community gem, and she is brilliant.
