PUYALLUP: School board needs Looker’s insight

The News Tribune was right in its editorial (10-12) about the challenges the Puyallup School Board will face in November, but I believe it was wrong to endorse Pasquier over Looker. Some information TNT omitted is extremely important in candidate selection.

Pasquier consistently states she is for “standards-based grading.” Parents and educators disagree with this practice. Voters should check to see how effective it’s been elsewhere and with colleges. I’ve found businesses don’t give multiple (three or more) opportunities to get work done correctly, nor do they give credit for not doing the work at all.

Pasquier has also shown a tendency to be swayed as the superintendent’s wishes (standards-based grading is one example). She also has ties with current board member Chris Ihrig.

Looker, on the other hand, is a third generation Puyallup family man. His fresh insight and community values are what the Puyallup School Board needs. Being retired, Looker can make the Puyallup School Board his “day job” (Pasquire already has a day job). The skills Looker used to become an NFL athlete – desire, drive, determination, the ability to work with a variety of people, etc. – will serve him well on the school board. He is not tied to the superintendent or any current board members.

Looker, for Position 2, is our best vote for new leadership on the board, a voice for our community, our children and positive change on our school board!
