PUYALLUP: Martineau is walking the walk

Having just received my ballot, it is time to sit down and consider the choices for Puyallup City Council.

Nicole Martineau has experience balancing the budget, she represents young families, has a business degree and has a real commitment to the community, as well as to the Council that extends beyond just attending the meetings. She is a dedicated and committed volunteer supporting the library, the animal shelter, the rain gardens and St. Francis House. Not only does she talk the talk, she walks the walk.

With three open seats on the council, this is a very important election. In addition to Martineau’s qualities and experience, she will be the only woman on the council. Although that in itself is not a reason to vote for her, it is a fact that should be considered.

Anyone attending the recent candidate forums had to be struck with the visual of eight men and one woman on the stage. My vote is for the most qualified candidate for the Puyallup City Council at-large position: Nicole Martineau.

I also attended the forums but noticed something different from you.
At the League of Women Voters Forum she raised her hand supporting both Initiative & Referendum and putting city services in publicly owned buildings; yet she voted no to the I&R last year and twice she voted no to just studying the possibility of moving city services into city owned buildings.
I also noticed at all 3 forums that she seems to be unable to answer a question without reading from her note cards. Not much different then when she applied for the position last year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRSn2nxb5iQ

  2. On an extremely rare occassion is a single candidate endorsed by all public safety agencies and a key newspaper. Steve Vermillion is endorsed by your fire fighters (The Pierce County Professional Fire Fighter Union Local #726), your police officers (Puyallup Police Association) and just today, by the Tacoma News Tribune. Now that’s an expression of confidence as to who is the best candidate. Congratulations Mr. Vermillion!

By the way Jared, the budget has to be balanced by state law, is prepared by the city manager and was only questioned by two council members, non of which was your candidate.

    Walking the Turner walk.

Typical liberal like Obama. Nominates 2 people for the supreme court based on race and gender, just to fill a quota and buy votes. Jared is pimping Nicole just to have a women on the council. How about just voting for the person who can do the job, not to fill a quota?

  4. If you look at Martineau’s you tube videos of her interview for her original appointment, you will notice she has to rely on her 3×5 cards to answer questions. In the forums she still has to rely on her notes and then read the answers. Walking the walk of the Turner camp–peas from the same pod.

It’s clear that with so many old wrinklies running for Puyallup Council that much of the desire to be elected is not to serve the public but to supplement their Medicare health insurance with the gold-plated City Health benefits.

Also, I would suggest that they tighten up their succession process so that the public get to vote on replacements via a special election instead of the “geriatric six” doing so.

The unfortunate death of George Dill two years ago should have been a trigger to make a more just system to represent citizens. Appointed members have sat on this council for the last 4 years. Hardly democratic.

  6. Yep Dave–I’m sure people have been attracted to serving on the council for the health care benefits just as you outlined. I guess that means you are pushing Martineau since this is her first real job and more than likely doesn’t need the health care coverage. She is one of the only council members who files for reimbursement of office expenses. If we have a clean sweep with four new members, it will give you new stuff to complain about.
