Tacoma’s Initiative 1 intendeds to indirectly weaken laws against marijuana use by infringing on the effectiveness of their enforcement. But people fail to realize that the illegality of marijuana use is federal law and is therefore no business of the City of Tacoma.
The U.S. Constitution specifically mentions that all federal laws will reign over any state or local law, which makes it unconstitutional for Tacoma to not abide by them. Now Initiative 1 may not be removing laws, but it is still a refusal to enforce them. One could look to California to notice that marijuana dispensers are allowed by state law but will still be raided by federal drug agents.
There are, however, very good reasons to change the law. But those wanting to make a difference must appeal to Congress. Therefore I appeal to all Tacoma citizens to forget Initiative 1 by voting no and then lobbying for federal change by contacting their members of Congress.
