TACOMA: ANWAR drilling, yes; NBA, no

Economic development occurs when more dollars flow into a community than flow out. Wasting public money trying to bring professional sports to Tacoma would do the opposite, even if successful.

Team owners won’t live here; players won’t live here; advertising, accounting, broadcasting, public relations and sports agents won’t live here. But they’ll gladly gather up big entertainment dollars paid by the local citizens and export them to wherever they do live. The hot dog sales and parking fees gained locally would be peanuts (pun intended).

If local leaders want to revive the area economically, best they put their influence into approving ecologically sound development of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Remember Prudhoe Bay? That boom, in the mid 1970s, brought well over 2,500 high-paying jobs to Tacoma. Arco, British Petroleum, The Ralph Parsons Company and Seattle’s Wright-Schuchart-Harbor Construction companies built and exported oil- and gas-processing modules here on our Tideflats. That boom lasted more than four years. I know; I was one of the W-S-H senior managers on the project.

  1. Let’s do the exploration in Vaugh, Bill. No sense in spending all that transportation money…

  2. LarryFine says:

Excellent points Bill. No doubt a bed wetter will suggest something completely assinine because they have nothing to add.

  3. LarryFine says:

    … wow… that was fast.

  4. Aw yes….”bedwetter”…..submitted from a highly intellectual source, who doesn’t comprehend “NIMBY”

  5. ::::chuckles knowing that the author once worked in management for a company that LF rails on constantly::::::

Sort of reminds me of how Mark Twain once said how smart his father got in 3 short years…..

  6. asceptictoo says:

wow, so we know that the players won’t live here in the vicinity. well where will they live? LA, Seattle or somewhere in Pierce County.

  7. quorient says:

Gee, even though the tacoma cops, firefighters, city dept. managers, and over 50% of tacoma employees won’t live in Tacoma, why would anyone think a Highly paid athelete, with the money to choose anyplace to live, would pass a chance to find a mansion in tacoma and be part of all the glitz and glamour we have here? The only people “required” to live in Tac, are elected and the city manager. Even though a handful have an apt. or house they register at In city for legal and campaign reasons, they don’t have to actually live here as long as they can afford 2 places , or their partner has a home outside tac.As long as tacoma looks good in the rearview mirror every evening, Job well done. Also, I see no reason to not drill in ANWAR, after all, the north slope is changed forever, even when the oil runs out, But hey 4 years of 2500 jobs vs disupting the environment forever, Its a no Brainer lol. And we have the same amount of space at the port for the graving docks, right?all is Great !!!! DRILL BABY DRILL, and my knocked up kid is no concern of yours.

  8. An NBA team would bring more jobs and more money to Tacoma that drilling in ANWAR.
