It is unfortunate that Joan Carson’s birding column (TNT, 10-16), noting complaints about the plague of the burgeoning crow population, incorrectly stated that it is illegal by federal law to shoot crows.
Federal law allows states to set a hunting season for crows. The state of Washington’s hunting regulations allow the holder of a small-game hunting license to shoot crows from Oct. 1 through Jan. 31. There is no bag limit. Further, our state’s game regulations provide that “Crows in the act of depredation may be taken at any time.”
Misinformation about the legality of shooting crows may be another reason that the crow population is a growing problem.
