BETHEL: Travel policy had a tragic result

The money crunch and resulting decisions made by the Bethel School Board seem to have resulted in the tragic automobile accident involving Graham-Kapowsin High School soccer players Clara Vallone and Maryssa Beare (TNT, 9-23).

Apparently the Bethel School District implemented the policy in 2008 that student athletes will not be transported by the school district to athletic events that occur after 5 p.m. if they are within the school district or the adjacent Puyallup School District.

This tragedy is the perfect example of why the team members for all high school sporting events must be transported by adults, authorized by the school district, to all sporting events unless it is their home venue. Students need only to know when to report to their own school for authorized transport; if they are late they will not be allowed to compete. The mature adult will then be transporting the team to the correct venue, all arriving at the appropriate time.

Where does the money come from? Well, how valuable are the lives of the students?

Carol – are you trying to say that the policy itself played the largest part in this tragedy? I think many people would disagree..

That’s ridiculous. If parents don’t want their teens driving themselves to extracurricular activities the parent should drive, or find another parent to carpool. Don’t blame the school district for a car accident.

In a way I understand this writers reason for blaming the school district for the accident. However, it was stated the driver was seen weaving in and out of traffic which leads me to believe she was in a hurry to get to the correct venue for the soccer game. I don’t know how these girls could not have known where they should have been in the first place. All of my grandchildren have attended schools in the Bethel School District. I currently attend my youngest grandson’s football games. I check and double check his schedule to make sure I know exactly where I need to be and what time I need to be there. What happened is a tragedy and my heart goes out to this girls parents, but please do not put the blame on a school district policy. Rather, in this time of budget crunches for all schools, maybe it is time to start getting rid of top heavy administrations so bus transportation might be reinstated and a tragedy such as this one, avoided.
