STRIKE: Maybe the devil made the teachers strike

Comedian Flip Wilson used to tell jokes about a woman who always had a pat answer whenever she made a bad choice in life – say like buying an expensive dress she could ill afford. She’d strike a defiant pose and proudly declare, “The devil made me do it.”

When the Tacoma teachers voted to go on strike, I thought they collectively made that choice – good or bad – for themselves. But according to the Sunday editorial, “Thank Gregoire for ending Tacoma’s pointless strike,” it was really all those lawmaking demons down in Olympia who drove Tacoma teachers to go on strike.

According to the editorial, “The Legislature itself bears much of the responsibility for this debacle.”

How much of the responsibility? The editorial doesn’t say. But whatever amount, the TNT thinks the teachers should share the blame with our Legislature for this “pointless strike.”

A modest suggestion to the editorial board: Next time try blaming the devil whenever you think folks screwed up and need an dependable scapegoat to point to. At least then your readers will know you’re only joking and we can all yuck it up together. And it’ll put you in pretty good company to boot. That would be Flip Wilson, not the evil one, of course.
