I was struck by two stories in your paper. First, Pierce County’s unemployment is now nearly 10 percent (TNT, 9-20). Second, Hallmark is now creating greeting cards for getting laid off (TNT, 9-21). Think of this: enough people are getting laid off that Hallmark believes they can make money selling these cards.
There’s lots of talk about the economy and building jobs. It’s time to stop talking and start doing something about it. The Pierce County Council needs to pass the proposal from Sumner that would allow the Orton Junction project to be built and create jobs here right away.
This proposal has been studied and debated extensively. To borrow the phrase, just do it already. The unemployment numbers may look scary, but they’re even scarier when they mean your neighbor can’t pay his mortgage or your daughter is trying to feed her family. This is about real people in our county needing jobs now.
With Orton Junction, the YMCA is ready to break ground tomorrow. Talk about shovel-ready. Plus, MultiCare wants to bring a health-care facility and there’s talk of more retail, a dedicated farmer’s market and maybe a movie theater. We’re talking hundreds of permanent jobs, especially jobs where senior citizens can maintain their income and teens can learn responsibility.
Please tell me we have not lost all common sense. The County Council needs to approve this proposal.
Let me know when we have the “problem” of too many jobs. I’ll personally ask Hallmark to make us a card.
