MILITARY: Don’t retirees deserve discounts too?

I have come across a lot of stores lately that offer military discounts. I am very happy to see that, as our men and women in service deserve this and much more.

My father is retired Air Force and has a military ID. While my family has shopped at stores lately with these “discounts,” we and/or my father have been denied these discounts. All the stores say they can only give military discounts to reserve and active duty personnel. So my father who is 100 percent disabled from serving our country in Vietnam and Korea deserves nothing for what he did?

The men and women who served before us deserve just as much respect as those who serve now. We are disrespecting those veterans that we supposedly love so much by denying them discounts that they deserve. Hopefully this will get changed in the future.

I am not sure where your dad shops, but My dad who passed away in 2008 always got his military discount. He was retired 22 years MSGT USAF.

  2. beerBoy says:

Stores that offer discounts do so without any subsidy. To kvetch that they don’t extend the benefits to Veterans is just whining – you want them to cut the discount program to active service too so you don’t feel cheated?

  3. A321196 says:

I have found many store employees are NOT knowledgeable concerning their employer discounts. As to two certain big box home improvement stores I recently found out they offer discounts to disabled veterans. All that is necessary is showing some proof, which is generally shown with a VA photo ID card which states “Service Connected” on it. There is no requirement to show the percentage of service connected disability, nor is it shown on the VA ID card.

I realize not every veteran with a service connected disability uses the VA system, but, if you are service connected I would recommend exploring the availability of services and the category you fall into.

If you feel you are being denied discounts unfairly, the next that happens, ask to speak to the manager and voice your complaint. If the manager ignores you and rejects your complaint, inform the manager, you are Profit and the Manager is overhead and your business will go elsewhere.

  5. beerboy sounds like a grouchy old man that drinks too much. To deny anyone that served this country is ludicrous. I agree with sincere to inform the manager and if that doesn’t work compain to the store/company headquarters.
