How many of my fellow Tacomans will be voting this week?

I’m just a few blocks out of the City Council Position 1 district in which my friend, Karen Smitherman, is a candidate. Unfortunately, I can’t vote for her, but I sure hope the voters in the district will.

Karen and I first met more than 20 years ago when we worked on a statewide initiative together. I was working in Olympia, and she was working here in Tacoma. We’ve been friends ever since. I admired how she worked well with so many different people in Tacoma and Pierce County. I also observed her working collaboratively as chair of the Pierce County Juvenile Justice Commission.

Karen has raised her family in Tacoma, knows the economic and social issues, and has always been active in community affairs. She could hit the ground running as a member of the City Council. She has the wisdom and the compassion to be a wonderful council member, and that is why so many people have endorsed her.

A vote for karen smitherman or anders ibsen is a vote for higher taxes. Is that what we need?

People are willing to pay more in taxes if it is narrowly defined and specifically written that w/o exception – including administering – all monies go to whatever it is.

For example, if we knew $1.00 per month would go directly to road repair and not 10-cents of it and 90-cents to new employees; or 43-cents of it to road repair and 20-cents to art and so forth.

We need someone that can draft city legislation to be that way. We need to start paying only for what we get; no open checks; no, sorry the money had to go to balance the budget because we didn’t aniticpate that or this.

    Can she do that?
