PARKS: Goat-goring lawsuit is ridiculous

Re: “Claims filed in death of hiker gored by goat” (TNT, 8-7).

I have been taking The News Tribune for more than 20 years, and only once in the past have I felt the need to voice my opinion.

The family of the man mauled are filing three wrongful-death claims agains Olympic National Park. They claim that park rangers did not give them adequate warnings against the dangers.

That is ridiculous. Although this was a tragedy, it is by no means the fault of the park. When you enter a forest, national or otherwise, you are now on the animals’ turf. What do they want the rangers to do? Get all the animals together every three years for an understanding discrimination/violence in the workplace seminar?

If you are naive enough to think there is no danger in those woods, stay in the city. If this family gets one cent from the lawsuit, then the system is seriously broken.

You are 100% correct Mr. Cornett. Hopefully this case will turn out the way it should – be thrown out. I’m for the animals!

Reports at the time of Mr. Boardman’s death said he was an avid hiker and familiar with the area he was in. How that translates to negligence by Olympic National Park is ridiculous.

  3. Just got back from a trip to Yellowstone. When I see idiots ignoring all the warnings I root for the animals to turn on them.

WILDlife is exactly that…..wild. the NPS has no control over them. If you want a cute and cuddly, perfectly safe vacation go to Disneyworld.

When I hike/backpack/camp, I accept the risks and take precautions to lower those risks. But I know that it is never “safe”.

Shouldn’t the lawsuit name the goat as well. Stupid is what stupid does.

Looks as if this claim has been rejected, and there will now be a lawsuit filed.

    Oh vey.
