The News Tribune did right in endorsing Joe Atkinson for Tacoma City Council Position 1 (editorial, 7-27). We need a council member who is strong and committed to putting the people of Tacoma above the interest groups that seem to get everything they want from our current weak council.
Karen Smitherman seems nice, but I am confused as to what she is actually going to do that is different or new. Her flier said little to nothing, and I am worried that she will be another status quo member who does as she is told by other members and interest groups.
What’s her plan on jobs? More of the same as companies, families and jobs continue to leave our city? We don’t need another political party insider.
Anders Ibsen concerns me the most. I’m surprised that someone would advocate so strongly for a multitude of tax and fee increases in the middle of a recession. I am also concerned about his views on decriminalizing pot in Tacoma when our youth already face drug abuse issues. These are radical views for our area.
To me the choice is simple. It’s either radical change (Ibsen), more of the same (Smitherman) or Atkinson. Atkinson is an experienced practical thinker who tells it like it is. He is committed to growing the middle class and has my vote.
