“Pierce County is a dumping ground for the state prison system, which for years has been sending Tacoma and its neighboring communities more than their share of ex-convicts.”
That was from a 2008 News Tribune article. Just today (TNT, 7-15), all three of the level 3 sex offenders registering to live in Lakewood or Tacoma were convicted of crimes originating in other counties.
I wish this was unusual, but it isn’t. I have seen this time and time again when reading the newspaper. Has anything changed? Are other counties taking back their criminals? It is an outrage if nothing has changed.
While I can understand victims rights advocates not wanting a criminal released back to the same area the victim lives, it isn’t fair to dump them in Pierce County so that we have shoulder the burden in finances to monitor and deal with them as well as the pain and suffering of new victims in our county when the criminals re-offend.
The Legislature and Department of Corrections need to do right by the tax-paying and voting citizens of Pierce county.
