MEDIA: Get lowdown on the Murdoch way

Letter by Carl A. Anderson, Tacoma on July 15, 2011 at 1:25 pm with 28 Comments »

Rupert Murdoch and his son James, the tycoons who own British tabloids and Fox News, will be appearing next Tuesday in front of a committee of the British House of Commons about the phone-tapping scandal by their newspapers.

It is about time that the Murdochs answered for their poison press tactics that have changed the political discussion in Britain and our country. Phone hacking, bribes and the distortion of news seem to be the Murdoch way. And now the FBI is investigating whether News Corp. hacked into 9/11 victims’ cell phones.

Its about time that we learned what the Murdochs and the News Corp. are all about.

  1. murdock is scum and he should and will pay.

  2. The FBI has launched an investigation…

  3. LarryFine says:

    Selective outrage on display.

  4. Bb – without your permission I am going to move my response to your very thoughtful, well-formed cut/paste entry here as this is more to the letter writers subject and we can create a new train wreck here:

For those who have wisely moved on from that thread but like watching the proverbial train wreck, beerboy, in a response, decided to provide list of “lies” from the FoxNews talking heads. Wow, I am bowl over that one could be lead to believe that one, only one news network could lie as much as FoxNews. I am flabbergasted.

I will, ladies and gentleman of the TNT Discussion Blog Jury, provide analysis and opinion that all, yes L&G’s ALL news organizations LIE to the extent of and at times, well beyond the threshold of lie… to “bold face, so I can get ratings and beat FoxNews kinda lie” (insert collective gasping here).

The evidence will be disturbing. But I have faith that you, L&G’s will perform an analysis and come up with the opinion that not only does FoxNews Lie, but all media LIES as they fight for your collective ratings… as they fight for your collective vote… as they fight to do the bidding of their corporate masters.

In the end, you…. You… YOU! L&G’s of the TNT Discussion Board Jury will come to no other conclusion that you really need to turn this crap off, expand your source data and research of issues beyond your current comfort level, evaluate quickly where the line of fact ends (if it ever begun) and the bloviating of opinion begins, perform you own analysis, form you own opinion, fight for truth…

I have faith in you.. I have faith in all of you.

(insert applause here from the peanut gallery)

  5. And the beer has been spilled….

  6. Boy that is…..

  7. LarryFine says:

In true fashion, it appears the moderator, yet again, is not interested in any balance and has deleted xx’s thought provoking counter and left the resident liberal/progressive/what ever he calls himself today’s links up.

    Not kooky at all… typical.

  8. Waiting with bated breath…..

So…..I guess you have decided to pass on your issued challenge to post a FOX lie that you would demonstrate was a statement of opinion(?) Cuz there are 21 lies I posted that you could choose from.

  9. ”Waiting with bated breath…..”
Thank you for your concise opening statement beerBoy.

Your honor, XX98411 of “You Aint Got Diddly Squat, LLC” representing the honor and integrity of FoxNews.

If it pleases the court, proceeding in no particular order, I submit the following as the first point for challenge:

xx – The John Stewart link was him reading politifact.com’s list. Explain how you can dismiss all of the following as “opinion”

They are. Every name on the list provided is from the opinion and analysis arm of the FoxNews Network. They have made statements of opinion of which they all, to one extent or another have had guest on to provide counter balance and/or attempt to refute. I submit that CNN and MSNBC also have similar formats that do exactly what FoxNews does. Hence if FoxNews “lies” then ALL networks “lie”.

John Stewart is not a arbiter of the all that is fair or accurate in media. He is a comedian… satirist by his own admission, hence anything he states needs to be taken with a large grain of salt and a sense of humour. Does he raise good points… yes, at times. But by definition, humour and satire stretch the “truth” to make a satirical point. Hence the line of what constitutes a lie, from a satirist is not even in play as they have no obligation to provide any accuracy to what they say.

What you and others have done is considered “selective outrage”. A common disease amongst liberals. One might consider the company they keep to prevent such a transmission.

(a whiney voice states “Objection, your honor”)

I apologize to the court for my last statement..

    (Turning to Judge Dredd)

Thank you your honor, If it pleases the court, I release the floor to beerBoy…

  10. Roncella says:

John Stewart/letterman sat. nite live, are all clown shows. Stewart is entertaining as is sat nite live. As far as being fair or balanced none of them are. They all lean very far far far left even with their comedy shows formats comments.

  11. “John Stewart/letterman sat. nite live, are all clown shows.” They are entertainment – specifically comedy shows – and do not claim to be news shows.

Fox is officially a self admitted entertainment network claiming to be a fair and balanced news network.

  12. If it please your honor Judge Dredd, I request that the post by xring, July 17, 2011 at 5:34 PM be stricken from the record as non-responsive, imflammatary, and just plain troll like…

    Your Honor?

    Judge Dredd so orders…

  13. Read for comprehension please:

John Stewart read a list of 21 Fox News Lies from Politifact.org.

Being an Opinion Personality does not mean that you only state opinions and thus cannot be a liar. When they make statements of fact that are false it is a lie – even when it is Glenn Beck who says it. Let’s take one example and you try to explain how it is “just opinion”:

Bill O’Reilly: “We researched to find out if anybody on Fox News had ever said you’re going to jail if you don’t buy health insurance. Nobody’s ever said it.” — Pants on Fire! (April 27, 2010)

Again – try to explain how that isn’t a lie because it is an opinion. Sheesh! the relativist post-modern games the RightCons try to pull…..

  14. The current foxbat entertainment spin is that NewsCorp is honorable, fair, and balanced and is the victim of a left wing smear campaign.

  15. “the victim of a left wing smear campaign.”

Doesn’t the right always play the victim card?

  16. bb – you might want to take your own advice about reading for comprehension… two things

One – If you believe with every fiber of your soul that FoxNews lies, then my premise is ALL – MSNBC and CNN – held to the same standard as FoxNEWS…. They all lie using the same standard and definition. Right, wrong, at this point I don’t care. It is not difficult to validate all of them and recognize their respective bias.

Two – Politifact has some value. I ask that when you read their assessment of the statement you quote above, do you not see the gyrations that they go through to one – explain the issue and two – set up the conditions they measure by to determine whether it is “true” or not. Politifact made some concessions but set up a condition that then determined the statement as false… based on that condition. If you are going there… see point one above and my opening statement.

Three – do you not realize what we are arguing here. There was yet another attempt to disparage FoxNews. With big headlines – FoxNews Bad (or whatever). When you parse the study it was clear as day that viewer preference (according to the study) for the one over the other was only 1-2 points better based on their measure. I remember making the analogy that if all the news media was in the cesspool and the only reason MSNBC fair better was because they had one less lump of feces on them.

My premise stands – the news media is to be taken with a grain of salt and I encourage all of you to look at other sources to broaden your range of sources and viewpoints. Some are more trustworthy that others… with an open mind that will soon be clear.

  17. LarryFine says:

    Tip o’ the iceberg… LOL !

“President Bush never did one interview with the New York Times during his entire presidency.”

Fox News “said the New Black Panther Party decided the election for Barack Obama.”
“President Bush never did one interview with the New York Times during his entire presidency.”

Under changes being debated, state employees in Wisconsin “who earn $30,000, $40,000, $50,000 a year might have 20 percent of their income just disappear overnight.”

With his decision on whether to fire Gen. Stanley McChrystal, President Obama “has to fix yet another problem he inherited from the Bush administration.”

“Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu received almost $1.8 million from BP over the last decade.”

“Despite what you may have heard about Wisconsin’s finances, Wisconsin is on track to have a budget surplus this year.”

Msnbc lies about white gunman at obama speech

Keith Olbermann lies about SIOA freedom rally against Islamic mega-mosque

Keith Olbermann lies, says Sarah Palin is a socialist and described Alaska that way

  18. bb – without more input from you I am not too sure where to go with this.

I think LarryFine bought up a great point about “selective outrage” especially in light of that study I believe was covered on this blog a while ago. All media was rated low on their arbitrary scale. Please…

You think FoxNews “lies” and only they “lie” then more power to you. Fair advice, you will be arguing from a point of weakness not because of your view of FoxNews but because of a suspected view of the competition (I shouldn’t assume mostly because I really don’t care)

  19. Roncella says:

The libs can say what they want to in attacking Fox News. The Truth is Fox comes the closest to being fair and balanced in presenting the News.

their programs present both the left and right opinions on the issues.

Looking at MSNBC and their Mr. Ed show and Rachal Maddow, and Chris Mathews, and the orther station featuring Keith Olbermann , none of these shows present both side of the news or issues, None of them.

  20. ou think FoxNews “lies” and only they “lie”

I stated that Fox lies – I made no claim about the other networks.

(FYI – I think all corporate media news is horrible but Fox is even worse).

  21. “(FYI – I think all corporate media news is horrible but Fox is even worse). ”

We could have save the cost of a “trial” if you had just stated that as a position to begin with. Jeeze…

Curious, you used Jon Stewart and Politifact to bolster some case you think you had…. what do you think of them in the “corporate media” world?

  22. LarryFine says:

“I stated that Fox lies – I made no claim about the other networks.” = selective outrage…

  23. LarryFine says:

  24. Roncella says:

Wouldn’t it be Very Interesting to have George Soros open his books completely so the public WorldWide could see where his money is going and where it comes from. Oh Yea, Very interesting for sure.

  25. ron – are you suggesting that all private citizens and corporations should be required to “open their books”? Or just one that you don’t like?

  26. LarryFine says:

George Soros is not a citizen of the U.S. … Dan Rather is.

  27. Roncella says:

beerBoy, Tell me you would not be interested to know where George Soros gets his money and how he spends it and why he has visited with Obama over 6 times at the Whitehouse.

  28. The scum murdoch has paid over 655 million to cover his crimes, any yet Soros needs to open his ‘books’??

come on rocella, news corp is bring down the Prime minister of Briton and you defend them?
Is there no limit to your partisnship?
