PIERCE COUNTY: Redistricting shoud be redone

Re: “Panel adopts district map despite critics” (TNT. 7-13).

What a mess! I am not politically shrewd, but even I understand how important redistricting is for fair representation of community interests.

The Pierce County Council didn’t place much importance on it, given the inadequate time allowed to develop a redistricting plan. Districting Committee members didn’t take it too seriously either, apparently believing it was an honest, above-board exercise in equitable redistribution of voting power.

Committee members learned about the plan adoption rules for the first time Tuesday evening, and also learned that the Democrat appointees and their politically affiliated “Master Redistricter” had rigged the game. Steven Garrett “submitted” a seriously flawed final redistricting plan which by county statute must be approved by the majority of committee members or become “by default” the adopted plan.

The committee could have amended the plan by a supermajority vote, but Democrats Kenneth Blair and Sam Ross weren’t playing – they had already won the game – to the disappointment, frustration and disadvadvantage of communities throughout the county.

Ross and Blair couldn’t be bothered during the meeting to participate in discussions designed to seek a compromise solution, and Ross and Karen Seinfeld couldn’t be bothered to come back after final map errors were corrected to work toward a healthy compromise.

So there you have it: Everything that is wrong with politics and politicians wrapped into one neat, 60-day package. Here’s to the incompetent master redistricter and his fellow Democrats for putting one over on us. The adopted plan disrupts communities throughout the county and should be immediately redone.

  1. Let me guess…if it “favored” Republicans, all would be fine, right?

  2. tommy98466 says:

Kardnos… like other politically ignorant folks you missed the point. Gerrymandering to favor one political party over another is illegal. Democrats will do anything to win all elections. Even cheat, which they have been doing for years. Until the democrats are eliminated from political power these crooked antics will continue. What a pathetic outcome.

  3. brit_abroad says:

That’s funny @tommy … aren’t the Republicans currently in power and didn’t they win a majority on the council as a result of the last gerrymandering, oops I mean redistricting, 10 years ago?

  4. Yes, the “us” the writer was referring to is Repubklicans, who stand tio benefit as much from this redistricting as they did from the last. They just want to cry “foul’ to have an excuse ready at hand. As for splitting up neighborhoods, any redistricting must leave artificial boundaries.

Maybe if Parkland would vote to be a real city instead of an unincorporated suburb of Tacoma that they want to be, a designation of them as a unified location might be appropriate. They never vote to be considered a “together” place, so why should we consider them as one entity?

  5. Tommy….were you angry when Tom Delay and the Texas Republicans gerrymandered several Democrats out of office?

    Politically ignorant? Mois?

Never. I have the internet at my fingertips.

  6. LarryFine says:

Were you, Larry ? Because if you were than you should join those who object in this case.

  8. puyallupmutt says:

The last vote of any significance that mattered on this council was about a dozen years ago. It was the decision to go ahead and build the new jail. The council held their noses and voted for it.

Those with vision at that time said that from that point on, taxpayers would be paying so much out of the budget for the jail that other business would be pretty much minor.

    They were right.

Just as well too as the bunch on the council these days are too inept to make a decision of significance. Particularly the Rep from the 2nd District.

  9. bobcat1a says:

Gerrymandering? IOKIYAR! That’s shorthand for: It’s OK if you’re a republican.

  10. LarryFine says:

… so you’re saying it’s ok now bob … we get it.

  11. Why should political parties be involved in redistricting at all?

  12. LarryFine says:

    That’s what I thought Bob.

  13. The more the right whines and cries, the more you know it’s done correctly, fairly and honestly.

  14. PumainTacoma says:

Is this another overblown headline story by the News Tribune to make attention to get their way?
