JUSTICE: Sentences insult Lady Justice

In the sky of my life shine five lucky stars, all lovely ladies.

My constellation is christened after the brightest of the bunch – Lady Luck, through whose grace and kindness I was introduced to the other four stunners of scintillation: Lady Liberty and Lady Justice, who represent America to me; Lady Washington, my beloved home and pet name for the Evergreen State; and Lady Sharon, my lady love.

Now Lady Luck and Lady Sharon get along with all the rest. But for reasons well beyond my ken, Lady Washington, every now and then, likes to stick it to Lady Liberty and/or Lady Justice.

Naturally, I sagely steer clear of these occasional dustups. Except when they are particularly lopsided, then published in the TNT.

On July 1 the TNT published two stories that perfectly illustrate what I’m talking about. In one, a man in his 30s is convicted of beating a woman near twice his age with a barbell, then running over and killing her. His sentence: a little over 14 years.

In the other, a punk kid takes some pot shots in a mall, injures seven, but killing no one. His sentence: 163 years.

Now I know Lady Washington has a soft place in her heart for convicted murders. But 14 years for brutally murdering someone and 163 years for a kid who kills no one? That’s nuts. Not to mention mighty insulting to Lady Justice, who is, after all, necessarily blind – not dumb.
