JOBS: Automation + immigration = unemployment

Between illegal aliens streaming into America to do jobs that many Americans could do but would rather not do because they can live about as well by letting the government provide for them, and the fact that automation is reducing the need for workers, it isn’t surprising that so many people are unemployed.

Not too many years ago when someone pulled into a service station, one or two attendants came right out to fill the tank, check the oil and clean the windows. Now, with access to debit or credit cards, one employee can tend to 15 to 20 customers. One backhoe operator can dig more gas or cable trenches than 50 pick-and-shovel workers. And when was the last time someone called a government agency or a large private business and was answered by a live operator?

The bottom line is that about the only jobs that are not now under the attack of automation are the manual labor jobs that illegal immigrants are eager to do because even those jobs offer them a better way of life.

I really don’t blame them, but if our government doesn’t put a stop to this invasion, where does it all end? This is a nonpartisan issue because Presidents Bush and Obama are both guilty of failing to secure our borders.
