TACOMA: Ban all digital billboards

Tacoma is poised at a crossroads in its renaissance and economic development. Will Tacoma soar with its unique vistas of Mount Rainier and charming, sometimes quirky historic architecture? Or will Tacoma be marred with urban blight from digital billboards?

The decision that the City Council will be making to ban or allow digital billboards will affect Tacoma for years. If Clear Channel Outdoors, a nonlocal sign company, has its way digital billboards will denigrate Tacoma’s beauty and reverse its economic progress.

I urge the mayor and the City Council to listen to the people who elected them. Digital billboards are not “aesthetically pleasing” as Mayor Marilyn Strickland says.

While I gather signatures on a petition to oppose digital billboards, people routinely tell me that digital billboards create visual blight and cause distraction when driving. Strickland and the City Council need to ban digital billboards in their entirety, show backbone and enforce Tacoma’s 1997 ordinance that requires removal of 193 nonconforming billboards.

  1. I really do not know what it is going to take for the city council to follow the wishes of its citizens. I am eagerly looking forward to voting against Mayor Strickland the next time she is up for any election. If the mayor and the council members have any doubt about these billboard, why don’t they find out where they are located in other municipalities. Take a trip and visit them during the dark and well as the day timet. The US Supreme Court has consistently ruled that “commercial free speech” does not enjoy the same protections as “political free speech.” Why is the city council afraid of Clear Channel?

Anyone who is against video billboards should make their opinion count by voting out all incumbent city council members, especially Mayor Obama, pops I mean Strickland.
