WEINER: Sex scandals embarrass us all

Letter by Wendy L. Lake, Auburn on June 9, 2011 at 2:31 pm with 62 Comments »
June 9, 2011 3:06 pm

I am so tired of hearing about elected public servants who can’t keep their pants on. How can we teach our children that our government leaders should be respected, admired and perhaps considered role models when we elect jerks like Anthony Weiner, John Edwards, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bill Clinton? These men are an embarrassment for all Americans. After all, we picked ‘em.

Warning to my candidates: If any politician I vote for gets caught up in a sex scandal, I will be the first one in line to picket your office, force your resignation and perhaps start a class action lawsuit to get my share of my taxes back that pays your salary.

I will embarrass, disrespect and humiliate you like you have me.

I’m just sayin’.

  1. Roncella says:

Great Letter Wendy !!! Bravo I couldn’t agree with you more.

  2. SadujTogracse says:

To be fair what Weiner did was much more than just have affairs. This is the reason why so many (including in his own party) are calling for him to resign. Reckless, twisted behavior like that to anonymous people on the internet cannot be tolerated by a person holding elected office. His judgment cannot be trusted.

  3. larsman says:

Muammar: hey, weiner howzit goin with the twitter ads I sent u last mnth of hotbabez?

Anthony: 2 hot Muammar, my exposure got exposed, tryin 2 hold on 2 power

Muammar: me 2 , change the vocab, call it a smooth transition like I’m gonna do

Anthony: thx Muammar, might try that next wk,, howzit w/ Burlesque-onni in Italy?

Muammar: u know we 3 need to vacation in Moroc. I know a swngn hot spot next to a costume shop

Anthony: no kddn Muammar? I’ll text U my next new twit # , grt idea, Bud…

  4. Really Wnedy? Those are the only 4 peole you could name?
The list of republicans is nearly endless and you can only come up 4 Democrats?
partisan ship is an ugly thing with you rightists.

  5. SadujTogracse says:

“The list of republicans is nearly endless and you can only come up 4 Democrats?”

Another erroneous statement, last I checked Arnold is a Republican. (Although I will grant he governed more like a Democrat).

  6. xtp – spot on the money.

The right has to preach morality because they don’t have any, and would not recognize it if it twittered them.

  7. SadujTogracse says:

“xtp – spot on the money.”

So making a factually incorrect statement is spot on the money? Must be more of that “lefty logic”!

  8. KARDNOS says:

Wendy…..what about the Reverend Ted Haggard? How about the other clergy who have been involved in scandals. Do they count?

While we’re at it, police do it, firefighters do it, teachers do, principals do, the list goes on and on.

Who is left to do the jobs needed?

We got bloggers that show bare buttocks on the internet. Are they supposed to be examples?

  9. SadujTogracse says:

If a policeman, firefighter, or teacher were caught sending explicit sexual photos of themselves over the internet then they would be fired. The same standard should hold for an elected representative. I can’t believe some on the left are still defending the guy.

  10. All I can say is, where in my letter did I reference a political party?

  11. SadujTogracse thinks that a virtual affair with no touching is worse than an actual crime, like in Vitter’s case or actual physical sex in many others’ case. Wierd logic.

I am still waiting for Vitter to resign and for Republicans to call for his resignation and for Wendy to list Vitter, whose ongoing presence in the US Senate should be shamful to all Republicans, to call Vitter out.

At least Gingrich was taken down a peg today with his staff resignations because of his arrogance. However, most Republicans would have supported him and did support him in spite of his actual real adultery over and over again while he was in office.

Funny how it takes one Democratic Wiener to be waggled in the wrong place for the hypocrites to come out of the woodwork.

  12. SadujTogracse says:

Wendy, you didn’t. It was a fine letter. Pay no attention to the normal partisan hacks who have made erroneous comments about your letter and are trying to twist your words. Sadly it’s all they know how to do.

  13. SadujTogracse says:

“SadujTogracse thinks that a virtual affair with no touching is worse than an actual crime”

Lie number 1, I never said that. Hey I wanted Vitter to resign too. All you can do is play the “but he did it” game while totally ignoring what’s going on here and now. And for the 100th time now, there is a big difference between having a private affair and sending explicit photos to people you either don’t or barely know. We don’t know for sure that Weiner hasn’t committed a crime, the investigation will uncover that.

  14. S_T
    “Lie number 1”

S_T, June 9, 2011 at 3:59 PM says “To be fair what Weiner did was much more than just have affairs.”

John Ensign had an affair with an married employee and tried to pay her and her husband hush money (aka paid a bribe).

John Vetter used an illegal prostitution ring to satisfy his perverted lusts (something about woman toes).

    “anonymous people on the internet”
Most on his contacts were on his twitter account so were hardly anonymous.

Nobody on the left is defending Weiner.
We are just pointing out the well know right wing hypocrisy when it comes to wrong doing on the Rpot side of the aisle.

  15. Still waiting for Republicans to even acknowledge that what Vitter did was a crime and that he should resign. SadujTogracse, Wiener is innocent of any crime until there is proof that he did something;. Vitter acknowledged breaking the law. Big difference.

What is the meaning of “more than” in your post above? I interpreted it as “greater than”, which is its usual meaning. So I guess what you mistyped and meant to say is “less than”, or is “equal to” since you are denying saying “more than”.

  16. Don’t hold your breath Wendy, history is full of leaders and their many mistresses.
Disgusting, deplorable …. we all know it is.

  17. The biggest lie there is that Weiner sent a photo to someone that hadn’t given him permission to communicate with her.

It’s the lie that Saduj keeps spinning over and over and over….

Twitter requires a “friend” permission, somewhat like Facebook.

Now let’s go back to the question all of us want to know. How did Brietbart get his hands on the pictures?

  18. Well put, Frida.

  19. “SadujTogracse says:
    June 9, 2011 at 3:59 pm
To be fair what Weiner did was much more than just have affairs.”

Just to be fair…this is a damned lie. twitter is access by permission.

  20. Roncella says:

Wow the liberal/dem posters here are all twisted into a big circle pointing fingers at others who did wrong all to defend their precious democrat Wiener.

It just does not matter to the lib/dems what Democrat Wiener has done or not done, they go on defending him, like Charle Rangel, Maxine Waters, so many others who have been caught but are still serving in the Congress,

shame on their leaders, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.

  21. Get a life. Stop worrying about other’s sex lives.
At least Anthony isnt wearing diapers and seeking out prostitutes like Senator Vitter.

  22. LarryFine says:

… who was it a week ago that posted the “media matters” talking points claiming Weiner’s twitter account was hacked ??? ( ie. “making excuses”)

    3 guesses and the first 2 don’t count…

  23. I’m not embarrassed by the actions of any politician, even one for whom I voted. They can only embarrass themselves. They only hurt themselves.

I’m not even embarrassed by your letter, Wendy.

  24. Roncella says, “It just does not matter to the lib/dems what Democrat Wiener has done or not done, they go on defending him,”

No one is defending Weiner. But then you’re not sure what we’re saying in the above posts.” Are you?

  25. SadujTogracse says:

“Twitter requires a “friend” permission, somewhat like Facebook.

Oh so just because someone is your “friend” on Facebook that means you can send nude pictures to them? Many people have thousands upon thousands of “friends” especially famous people and politicians. That DOESN’T mean they know the people they are friends with. The Seattle woman did not ask for that photo.

  26. SadujTogracse says:

“Just to be fair…this is a damned lie. twitter is access by permission. ”

And again, that doesn’t give the person permission to send explicit photos.

  27. SadujTogracse says:

“What is the meaning of “more than” in your post above?”

Well if you would have read the entire sentence it was sending explicit photos to people you don’t/barely know (and yes “friends on FB/Twitter can still be people you don’t know, contrary to Kardnos lack of knowledge on the subject) is worse than having an affair. Vitter broke the law, I’m not disagreeing with you about him, he disgusts me as well. I’m the one being consistent here, I wish BOTH would resign. You are the one defending Weiner (if you’re not calling for him to resign or making this out to be less than it is then you are defending him)

  28. Roncella, please point me to any quote where Reid or Pelosi have defended Wiener or his actions during this scandal?

In fact, Pelosi called for an Ethics Committee investigation and said:

“I am deeply disappointed and saddened about this situation; for Anthony’s wife, Huma, his family, his staff and his constituents.

That is unlike the Vitter thing where the Republican leaders actually give money, tell his constituents what a fine “family man” he is and blocked any ethics investigation because the statute of limitations had run out before he confessed to his crimes.

Plus, actual adultery, criminal prostitution and poopy pants is so 2007. Abuse of Twitter is much more serious.

  29. SadujTogracse, I am not calling for either of them to resign. I am calling Republicans and others who call for Wiener to resign, but not Vitter, hypocrites.

I believe that constituents votes and a person’s own conscience should reign in these matters if they are not serious enough for ejection by the House or Senate after proper investigation.

I also think this is a staged over reaction by Republicans to latch on to any issue so people will forget their Medicare blunders, lack of action on economic issues, and other more important activities they should be doing.

I must admit to falling for it. Its a lot more fun for us to argue about, titilating and disgusting in the extreme, than more serious discussions about supply-side and demand-side economic policies.

I’ve said elsewhere that I would not vote for either and would actively campaign against both of them if I lived in their voting areas.

  30. SadujTogracse says:

Tuddo, the sad part is if Weiner would have just resigned this thing would be over already. He’s the one causing the problem, not the Republicans. You keep bringing up Vitter every second but fail to mention Rep. Lee who resigned over something a lot less severe than Weiner’s actions. If this were just some affair I wouldn’t be harping on it this much, but in my view his actions were reprehensible. As I stated above if a fireman, policeman, or teacher were caught doing the same thing, they would be fired. Shouldn’t the same level of standards be applied to Congressmen?

  31. Many politicians have learned that if you don’t resign, you will get rewarded with reelection. Vitter learned this, Strom Thurmond knew this, Gingrich learned this, and there are countless others who learned this, too.

Rep Lee’s story would not have even made the big time if he hadn’t resigned. It would have been tabloid fodder, a flash in the pan, so to speak. I respect his decision based on regret for his actions, or for not to having to look at his aging abs in every tabloid, whatever.

The people who hired Vitter and Wiener should be the ones to fire them, and that is their constituents, not public opinion polls. If Wiener’s district does not vote him out, then I will hold the same opinion of that that I hold for Louisiana voters who voted for Vitter, disgust.

  32. SadujTogracse says:

tuddo, I can respect that. I just feel because of the severity of what he did, that he should resign now and if he wants to run again then let the voters decide. Good discussion though!

    Ms. Lake,

Good letter. I would agree most (if not all) of our politicians should be ashamed of themselves for their actions.

I’m going to guess that since you only mentioned Democrats (and one republican in name only who many claim is a democrat) in scandals, you were referencing a political party. Doesn’t really matter to me as the individuals named should be ashamed.

    tuddo,

    Well written. Good job.

  34. BlaineCGarver says:

Good letter, Wendy….Ignore the trolls….I dispise ANYone who disrespects their office/oath.

  35. BlaineCGarver says:

The most pathetic arguements are those that try to draw a moral equivalency between who a post is talking about and someone else. Start your own Thread if you want to talk about someone else, you losers.

  36. Blaine, this post is about “elected public servants who can’t keep their pants on” and “any politician …(who)…gets caught up in a sex scandal” as noted in the topic sentences of Wendy’s letter. So, Gingrich, Strom Thurmond, Clinton, and a host of others that this post is talking about, unfortunately for our country.

Vitter still hasn’t resigned and the Republican leadership still has not called for his resignation.

  37. Roncella says:

tuddo, Big dang deal !!! Nancy Pelosi has called for an senate investagation,

So What, nothing ever happens during or after the investagtions are completed, many are not ever completed, surely someone as knowledgeable as you with all your past experience in Government is aware of the toothless senate investagation to really drain the swamp as Pelosi promised everyone she would do, ha ha. If she not careful she may wash alot of her own dems down the drain in order to drain the swamp, what a joke, you just can’t make this stuff up it so funny and sad both.

  38. “you just can’t make this stuff up”

Yes you can, Roncella. You do it all the time.

  39. Yep, Roncella, you claim liberals posters are all defending Wiener. That is certainly totally made up, since none are on any threads in this paper. We may be defending the principle of innocent until proved guilty, but those are not defending Wiener, but defending America and one of the reasons for its greatness.

You pointed the finger and said “shame” to Pelosi and other dem leaders for defending Wiener. That was certainly made up.

You claim that nothing ever happens due to investigations, and that is certainly made up. Rangel got censured, Foley resigned in the face of an investigation, Nevada senator Ensign just resigned after years of being supported by Republicans for his actions. He only resigned when Republicans finally realized that he would be facing criminal charges, so they agreed to an investigation. Maybe Wiener will resign, too, and the threat of an investigation would have served its purpose in this case, too.

The sad thing is that I think you actually believe thisparanoid claptrap you make up.

  40. Paranoid, maybe. Delusional for sure.

  41. Roncella says:

tuddo, for someone who likes to act superior on these posts and who seems to think they are the last word on every discussion, you have no idea how foolish your liberal leftest comments are to most folks in the norm.

You know the folks in the norm tuddo, across this Great Nation who love and believe in America and want it to go on being strong and playing a positive leadership roll in World Affairs.

Liberals like yourself are more comfortable apoligizing and finding faults with America and most of the decisions made over many years.

You are quick to find faults slow to show pride in the Greatest Country On The Planet. Very Dispappointing.

  42. Oh and Roncella…..I don’t think tuddo is ACTING superior…..

  43. “Roncella says:

What is funny is the ignorance displayed. First of all, Pelosi called for a HOUSE investigation. She is not a Senator.

Secondly, much comes from investigations – penalities and sometimes innocense.

Just because Roncella doesn’t agree with the outcome, doesn’t make it wrong.

    Trying running for Congress, Roncella.

Good letter, Wendy….Ignore the trolls….I dispise ANYone who disrespects their office/oath.”

You wanna bet Blaine voted for McCain????????

  45. Roncella says:

KARDNOS, Are you seriously telling eveyone here, you think Democrat/Weiner has more morals and is a better representitive than Senator John Mc Cain ???!!!

If you are, Kardnos, you need a mind adjustment fast, your so far out in left field, its totally unbelieveable…

  46. Roncella says:

KARDNOS, As a Liberal/Progressive Democrat, What do you think Democrat Anthony Weiner should do in response to being caught sending his sexy messages and pictures and phone calls to underage women and more etc. ????

  47. Most assuredly delusional.

  48. Ah yes, the “treatment” response, something like the Twinkie Defense these days. What rehab group is going to…Dirty Old Men Anonymous? DOMA.
How about TA, that could stand for a couple of things.

  49. I think he shpould do exactly like Vitter did when he confessed to illegal activity and very sick behavior. Oh, wait, Vitter didn’t do anything, but get tons of Republican money and support.

  50. “tweetment” sozo, “tweetment”….

  51. I think we need a morality gang to enforce the Scriptures regarding sexual impulses We could call them the Taliban.

  52. Roncella says:

tuddo, your so concerned about vitter, and what he did and that he is still serving etc. wheres your outrage for what President Bill Clinton pulled off while President both in the Oval office with his special pizza parties with monica lewinsky and others ?

Clinton is the leader of the democratic partyl he is the unofficial expert and leader of all things democrat.

tuddo, wheres your concern about having Clinton as your parties leader ???

  53. Roncella, as I have said other places, I keep bringing up Vitter to show the hypocrisy of Republicans asking for Wiener to resign as they provide cover, support and funds for Vitter.

My personal belief is that the electorate should decide. (I have stated that I would not vote for Wiener and would actively oppose him.) Exploration and investigation of charges should be conducted, as appropriate, and due process should be given.

I have no problem with the impeachment Clinton received, and for which he was declared not guilty by the Senate. I have no problem with Wiener being investigated, and if the House votes him out after finding that he violated their rules, then so be it. However, Republicans have blocked every effort to investigate Vitter, so my charge of hypocrisy stands.

We disagree on what you think the situation calls for. I am sorry for everyday Republicans who do have a sense of moral outrage that hypocrisy and political opportunism by their leaders and elected representatives trumps their party’s stated values.

  54. Wieners cohorts in the democratic party seem to believe he should resign too. This is NOT really a partisan issue despite the many attempts here to make it one.

    Ah…”tweetment, Pol.” Maybe I need tweetment…or you? :0)

    bBoy, please. Really?

  55. Yes sozo, really.

The allegation that there were underage girls involved is the only thing that troubles me. Other than that – what ever kink one has that doesn’t harm anyone else is no concern of mine and should be no concern of anyone else.

  56. swear to faithfully execute the office of (your office…here) so help me God….

Photo Op over? Drive me to the “party”

The HOLIER THAN THOU ONE is at it again. Sexual addiction is just like any substance addiction or addiction to the concept that there is a great fairy in the sky that rules all and will come back to destroy the earth and take only those CHOSEN FEW back to the imaginary Nirvana.

12 Step programs have saved millions of lives and my experience is that there are more people that need 12 step programs than there are that participate in them to improve the challenges in their lives.

Having met people that have dealt with sexual addiction, they keep doing what they know is wrong and not working for their life, because the power of the addiction is stronger than the power of reason.

Sort of like the guy that stops every night at the tavern after work….even though he drives drunk home, he knows there is no problem because he hasn’t been fired from his job.

I wonder if that would make for national headlines?

  59. Roncella says:

KARDNOS, Your wrong again. The work that we send our Congressmen to Washinton D.C. to do has everything to do with them working on Government Problems.

They are paid terrific wages and benefits by the Tax Payers. They need to stop with all the playing around and get to work on the many many problems facing the Country.

Thats why they were elected by the Voters, to represent the voters in Washington D.C. understand Kardnos.

  60. “Roncella says:

    KARDNOS, Your wrong again.”

    Irony, at its best.

Elected officials are not superhumans, Roncella. Remember Richard Nixon?

Besides, what does their election and pay have to do with an illness????

  61. Roncella says:

KARDNOS, Having a Illness as you describe Democrat Weiners affairs with under age females while being a member of Congress is OK with you ?

Democrat Weiners Pay and benefits is mentioned because most ot the taxpayers who are paying Democrat Weiner don’t have the wage level or benefits package that Democrat Weiner has enjoyed for years.
