OIL: Companies aren’t getting subsidies

Letter by Hank Harwell, Browns Point on May 31, 2011 at 1:40 pm with 95 Comments »

Re: “Republicans favor Big Oil over little guy” (letter, 5-29).

The writer claims to be confused by the Republican debt logic. I wonder why the writer and liberals in general persist in claiming that the oil companies are receiving subsidies at all. A subsidy is a grant or a gift of money. Oil companies are certainly not receiving any taxpayer-subsidized payments.

In fact, using the term “tax breaks” when referring to oil company earnings is somewhat misleading. Does the writer believe the oil companies are earning too much? In 2010, the industry earned 5.7 cents per dollar of sales compared to 8.5 cents for all U.S. manufacturing.

In 2009 the U.S. oil industry’s effective marginal income tax rate averaged 41 percent, compared to 26 percent for the S&P industrial companies.

Oil companies have paid the federal government more than $100 billion in royalties and lease payments since 2000. They pay more than $86 million to the federal government every single day. In addition, the industry has invested almost $1.7 trillion since 2000 in U.S. capital projects to advance all forms of energy.

The industry supports 9.2 million U.S. jobs and contributes to 7.5 percent of gross domestic product. The earnings of oil companies enhance their stock values, and oil company stocks are incorporated in many if not most current and future retiree investment portfolios.

  1. Roncella says:

Gosh Hank, are you trying to confuse everyone out here with the truth and facts too, incljuding President Obama and the lib/dems in the Congress

. One of their biggest argruments has been to blame high gas prices on the Oil Companies (And of course Bush and Cheney too).

  2. Publico says:

Hank, want to buy a bridge?

  3. SadujTogracse says:

Yeah funny how the left blamed high gas prices on GW Bush, now all of the sudden it’s due to oil speculation. Whatever fits their agenda, they have no shame.

  4. sue1234 says:

The day I read a letter from a gopcult member that is based on facts I’m gonna treat myself to a week in Hawaii.

Hank pull your own finger. You letter is absurd and I’m being nice.
Roncella, we can always count on you to prove the gop is a cult.

  5. KARDNOS says:

    “Hank pull your own finger”

Oh gawd, sue…..that is priceless!!! LOLOLOLOL

  6. KARDNOS says:

“In the summer of 2008, gas prices rose to $4 a gallon as oil prices skyrocketed to $145 a barrel, even though demand and supply were fairly constant. In summer of 2009, gas prices again rose, despite the recession, which decreased demand. Commodities traders were the reason for both. Gas prices also usually rise during the summer vacation season, as driving increases. Finally, gas and oil prices also increase whenever there is concern about surging demand from China and India, or a curtailment of oil supply.”

    Geez….I don’t anything about any Bush……..

    Fail.

  7. Hank, why do you want to be the slave or the hostage of corps?
Why do you want to give them more of your tax dollars and cut funding for children and education?
Just what do you expect to gain from that?

Republican and logic, two words that should never be used together.

  8. SadujTogracse says:

Either someone has a short memory or doesn’t know how to use Google. Here are just 2 of countless examples…
“How Bush Pushed Gasoline Prices Sky High”
    http://www.yuricareport.com/Energy/How%20Did%20Oil%20Prices%20Get%20so%20High.htm

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Thursday blamed the “two oil men in the White House,” President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, and their Republican allies in Congress for gas prices exceeding $4 a gallon.”
    http://thestarlette.net/2008/07/18/nancy-pelosi-blames-bush-and-cheney-for-gas-prices/

  9. KARDNOS says:

    Oh my…..I quoted a national economy magazine….

I’ll refrain from using such worthless media from now on….

  10. KARDNOS says:

    As usual….selective editing….

    from starlette.com….

“Pelosi, a California Democrat, said multiple initiatives intended to lower high energy costs have passed the Democratically controlled House only to “run into a brick wall” in the Senate because they did not receive the 60 votes needed to overcome Republican filibusters.”

It looks like the CONTEXT is that Pelosi feels the influence of Bush, Cheney and a fillibuster by Republicans kept regulation from happening with the oil industry.

It’s a little deeper than “it’s Bush’s fault”, when one wants to be intellecually honest about the subject.

    OH MY!!!

When you go past the headline of the “yuricareport” article, you find some depth and context again…..

“The Senate report said in a one-month period in mid 2002 the Bush administration purchases caused crude oil prices to soar, raising the cost of heating oil by 13%, jet fuel by 10% and diesel fuel by 8%. The bottom line was the Bush policy change cost citizens between $500 million and $1 billion.”

No wonder the Conservatives like to keep things in three word phrases like “drill, baby, drill”. Context and depth ruin their rants.

  11. SadujTogracse says:

So she blamed them, but she didn’t. More “logic” from the left. You see blaming the influence of Bush/Cheny IS THE SAME as blaming them. Talk about intellectual honesty!

  12. Roncella says:

KARDNOS, Both you and sue1234 win the dumb award. Unbelieveable that you both can’t remember one of your heros, nancy pelosi holding press conferences blaming Bush/Cheney along with anthony weiner, chuck shummer standing behind her, when gas was at 4.00 a gallon briefly while President Bush was President.

KARDNOS, As expert a computer geek as you are, you must be getting lazy, and very very forgetful.

  13. Publico says:

Amazing. Even after Kard went to great lengths to explain, Sad still does not get it.

  14. SadujTogracse says:

Kard didn’t explain anything, he (as usual) attempted to spin the story to suit his agenda. It’s plain as day that Pelosi as well as many others blamed Bush for the high gas prices during his Presidency. Only the most partisan on the left are trying now to say “but they didn’t”. Can’t have it both ways there Publico.

  15. LarryFine says:

Now you did it Frank ! You’re confusing them with simple, easy to understand facts.
Your local grocery store’s produce dept. maintains a 30% gross.
Heck, the U.S. government rakes in around 10 times more money from the sale of tobacco than the tobacco company.
    ………
Publico, you know darn well most poeple speed read thru toyotaman’s hackneyed redundant posts… if they read them at all.

  16. KARDNOS says:

    Kardnos didn’t say anything.

He just quoted from Saduj’s website links and proved that depth and context demonstrated ….once again…….

Saduj’s editing is for misrepresenation of the facts of a story.

And the wheel goes round and round….

  17. KARDNOS says:

    Roncella says:

KARDNOS, Both you and sue1234 win the dumb award”

Now this comment is coming from the King of Misspellings, Bad Grammar and poorly structure, run on sentences:

“Unbelieveable that you both can’t remember one of your heros, nancy pelosi holding press conferences blaming Bush/Cheney along with anthony weiner, chuck shummer standing behind her, when gas was at 4.00 a gallon briefly while President Bush was President.”

She blamed Bush/Cheney along with Anthony Weiner, and Chuck Shumer???

Bush and Cheney were standing behind her along with Weiner and Shumer??

Bush was briefly President? (we could have only wished)

Roncella, have you ever heard about glass houses and stones?

  18. KARDNOS says:

Now…as to what THIS LIBERAL says about gasoline prices….

George Bush wasn’t smart enough to fix the prices….but…..

He was great at ignoring the oil companies working their craft…….

George Bush was a name, much the same as Ronald Reagan. The party told them to smile, say stuff and stay out of the way of the important things.

  19. steilacoomtaxpayer says:

Quit picking on big oil, buy the stock! Darn, people, if the train is moving go with it or forget it. The prices do not reflect one or 20 men making manipulations, the big push is from American and other car drivers who refuse to work close to home and want to drive an Escalade. Walk, it will be you good as you count your stock dividends.

  20. KARDNOS says:

Steilacoom…..yeah…let’s get those single parents and unemployed working class people to buy oil stock. That will fix their lives!

  21. “Yeah funny how the left blamed high gas prices on GW Bush, now all of the sudden it’s due to oil speculation. Whatever fits their agenda, they have no shame.”

First of all, your generalizing too much. There’s always a certain segment on each political side blaming and discrediting the other. Ask yourself how funny is it that the right is now blaming Obama for high gas prices and denying speculation.

The same applies, “Whatever fits their agenda, they have no shame.”

  23. SadujTogracse says:

“Ask yourself how funny is it that the right is now blaming Obama for high gas prices..”

Personally I haven’t heard anyone on the right blaming Obama for high gas prices, but if it’s happening then it is just as stupid. See how easy it is to be consistent? Something the left will never figure out.

  24. Publico says:

There is adequate evidence to prove that Bush’s policies, in the early 2000’s when he decided to increase the strategic reserves, contributed to a significant rise in gas prices. All the rest is nonsense.

  25. Bottom line big Oil get tax breaks if you want to call them that that no other industry gets. When we are borowing money to continue these tax breaksand cutting tax breaks/subsidies for the poor and elderly then that is called – Wrong.

  26. LarryFine says:

“Increase strategic reserves” … you mean the “reserves” the president before Bush dipped into ?

It’s such a crack up really.
    ………..
“no other industry gets” … really ? LOL…

He opens the door for return criticism.

  28. “Personally I haven’t heard anyone on the right blaming Obama for high gas prices, but if it’s happening then it is just as stupid.”

Careful, Roncella has said numerous time on this forum that high gas prices are Obama’s fault. According to your friend, calling Roncella stupid is a violation of something or another…

  29. beerBoy says:

an examination of the American tax code indicates that oil production is among the most heavily subsidized businesses, with tax breaks available at virtually every stage of the exploration and extraction process.

According to the most recent study by the Congressional Budget Office, released in 2005, capital investments like oil field leases and drilling equipment are taxed at an effective rate of 9 percent, significantly lower than the overall rate of 25 percent for businesses in general and lower than virtually any other industry.

And for many small and midsize oil companies, the tax on capital investments is so low that it is more than eliminated by var-ious credits. These companies’ returns on those investments are often higher after taxes than before.

IS, I also love the items on your list, save Palin. What a ……….she is hogging attention and wasting people’s time again. Can you really see her as a Commander in Chief? She is cute and has spunk, but that don’t cut it with the Rooskies.

ItalianSpring said, “I LOVE oil, Palin, cherry pie, football, Subaru, freedom, America, and the the US Constitution.”

I love conserving resources, trees, gardening and home canning, hiking, my AMERICAN MADE Dodge mini-van, carpooling and…

…well, at least we can agree on America, freedom, and the US Constitution.

  33. I love it when people get so fired up over gas prices. Occasionally I drop gas at a certain big box store. They sell gas sometimes a dime or more less than the average gas station. That adds up to about two or three bucks in my own vehicle.

So I watch them sitting in long lines, pounding on steering wheels, raising their blood pressure, jumping from one lane to the next, fussing and whining because the line doesn’t move fast enough for them, then they get out, usually with a cell phone in their ear while handling hazardous material, fill their tank, saving that two or three bucks……..then they run straight to a little box in the parking lot and shell out SIX bucks for hot water filtered through beans!

I swear the brain of the average American car driver needs to be in a glass jar at Harvard! :D

  34. Roncella says:

KARDNOS, Your exactly right for a change.

President Obama and many of the dems. in Congress are deirectly responsibile for gas prices going up and up. Obama is for Green energy only, he has and is doing his best to turn most Americans against the Oil Conpanies.

He is against increasng Natural Gas exploration and usage, he is against more drilling for oil and increased refineries. He has done nothing to get the price down or investigate what can be done to lower the price.

Being President is more than playing basketball, golfing, vacations, parties every weds night, it Should be Serving All Americans in a host of different ways.

Kardnos, does it make you feel good to criticize folks who mis-spell or don’t complete a sentence properly, if it does you go right on doing it, I wouldn’t want you to do anything to damage your ego.

  35. SadujTogracse says:

When will Kardnos figure out that calling something stupid (like a phrase or a concept) is not the same as calling SOMEONE stupid? Seems he can’t tell the difference.

  36. “Conpanies”

Sigmund would have had a field day with that one.

  37. Roncella. Does it make you feel good that you cannot spell, can’t complete a sentence properly, and don’t seem to make any effort to educate yourself or improve?

  38. Roncella says:

Polago, apparently you want to be the spell check for everyone, please, by all means go for it.

The older I get the less I will change, What I do or What I Think or How I Write, How I Dress, etc. etc.

  39. I’m a lousy speller, Roncella. I use spell check, because those kinds of continued errors makes one look illiterate.

Do you enjoy being laughed at?

Can you not take constructive criticism?

  52. Back to the topic at hand:

Here is a video from the recent hearings in congress of big oil company CEOs testifying back in 2005, when oil was about 50 dollars a barrel, that they did Not need tax incentives so why do they need them now?

You can find videos that “document” all sorts of things.
See that’s the problem with people in the modern age who are ignorant about how videos are created and manipulated – they forget about editing, manipulations of point of view and other aspects of the medium.
Yes – video is evidence but it is not conclusive – and easily faked

  60. KARDNOS says:

You’d think Sen. Chuck Schumer would know the answer by now: Because they want those breaks. Because they think they deserve it, and anyone who says no to them is un-American. Kicking the unemployed, cutting social programs? Fine with big business and their Republican handmaidens. But touching oil company subsidies is a very bad thing!

ConocoPhillips, one of the world’s largest and most profitable oil companies, yesterday said it’s “un-American” to take away taxpayer subsidies from the oil industry. This wasn’t a verbal slip; the comment was put in a press release.

Congressional Democrats weren’t pleased, and at a Senate Finance Committee hearing featuring executives from all of the major oil companies, Dems sought an apology. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) repeatedly pressed ConocoPhillips CEO Jim Mulva on this point, but there were no regrets from the oil man.

SCHUMER: I want to ask you a specific question, do you think anyone who advocates cutting these subsidies is un-American? Yes or no, sir. That one we deserve a yes or no answer on, it was your release that said “un-American.” Yes or no?

MULVA: Senator, maybe you can hear me out on this because it’s a very important question.

SCHUMER: Do you apologize for it?

MULVA: Make no mistake, were these proposals enacted … they would place U.S. oil companies like our company …

SCHUMER: Sir, I have limited time. I know your view. Do you consider it American to have another view? Yes or no?

MULVA: Senator, I believe policies under consideration are going to have a very adverse impact with respect to energy policy.

SCHUMER: There are many people who disagree with that.

Yep, LarryFine….it never happened. Just a press release and a dialog about said press release in the Congressional halls…….

You can lead a jackass to water but you can’t make them drink it…..

    Then there is this…..
“ConocoPhillips Highlights Solid Results and Raises Concerns Over Un-American Tax Proposals at Annual Meeting of Shareholders”

    My source?
    http://www.conocophillips.com/EN/newsroom/news_releases/2011news/Pages/05-11-2011_1.aspx

Now let me guess. Someone faked Conoco Phillips website but Anthony Weiner’s twitter account can’t be hacked.

Since Conoco Phillips didn’t launch an investigation, I guess it’s true……

  62. KARDNOS,
I like that you put the rightists into thier place and so easily and quickly shut them down, but at some point you have to know you are simply feeding the trolls and I’m afraid, that alone gives them the ammo to complain to the mods about you, asking that you not they be banned.

Why would someone complain to the mods to have themselves banned?

    That is just cooky

  65. xtp….don’t look now, but I’m you. If you turn your head too fast to see me you’ll break your neck

Ask the Master of Many Monikers, LarryFine

  66. “That is just cooky ”

Are you sure that’s not “cookie” or is someone fixing breakfast with a pack of Camels rolled up in his tshirt sleeve?

  67. xtp – the moderators and I have conversed on a few occasions. I’m an old media guy and I speak their language. I know and understand the rules very well. I actually advised them of a potential virus risk one time.

I fully expect a comment or two to be deleted purely because the moderators are busy and sometimes just delete to get past it all and get on with their real work.

They all know my real name and one of them emailed me about a complaint from……well….a letterwriter/commenterthatweallknow and I spoke to my side of the issue and she understood.

Those that complain about moderation are the ones that violate the real important rules about privacy and such….and end up getting the heave-ho.

  70. Well KARDNOS, I understand and I’m glad that the mods do as well, but feeding the troll\s is something else.
I understand how much fun it can be making fools of them and all, I just don’t want to give them any more to whine about, which we all know they are doing endlessly.

  71. MarksonofDarwin says:

This is just so much fun to watch!

I’ve heard of it, but never have I witnessed an entire forum get destroyed. At first I was disappointed, but now the anticipation is killing me!

All of the proper elements are here:
Multiple accounts, feigning innocence, getting the moderator on your side, (or better yet…becoming the moderator) getting most of the “regulars” banned, eliciting sympathy and support from other “like minded” posters….and a few other requirements.

It’s only a matter of time….there hasn’t been any real new people commenting for quite some time.
I do wonder how it will go….will this forum just peter out, or will the troll eventually find himself to be one of only 3 people commenting….each one endlessly patting the other’s back. The possibilities are endless…..this should be really fun!

Let me know how I can be of any assistance. Here’s a start:

Oh, KARNDOS, you brilliant, brilliant man. Keep up the good work, and fight the good fight. You are oh so smart, and bring only high intellect to every single discussion. I anticipate your every key stroke with giddy excitement.
Please…..lean a bit closer so that all of us who completely agree with your every utterance can kiss your rounded cheeks. I simply can’t wait to read the bomb of posts you will most assuredly spam onto this thread…

  72. And the trolls just keep ccoming……the right has a bunch of them!

  73. MarksonofDarwin says:

    Yes, xtp. You’re soooo correct.
    Let’s get them all banned.

  74. MarksonofDarwin says:

I can’t believe that anybody would even question anything at all that KARNDOS does.
    He’s brilliant.
Many of the regulars on this forum agree with me….right here in this very thread they have given him a big ol’ smoochie.
    Go get ‘em Kards!

  75. MarksonofDarwin says:

Only those who have the same ideology as KARDNOS should ever be allowed to post here again.
    They’re all teh stupids….

  76. MarksonofDarwin says:

I don’t really want to steal any of the great KARDNOS thunder, so I should reserve my enthusiasm in bombing this thread so he can come back here with all of his brilliance and post many, many, many times.

Even though bombing a thread seems to be the preferred method of commenting for those running the TNT boards….we all know KARDNOS does it the BEST! I’m sure they’re happy to just leave him to it…

I’m also thrilled at the idea that many of KARDNOS alt. personalities will be joining in the total destruction….it’s so FUN!

    xtp,

Can you believe just how many right wing trolls are even allowed to post anything on this forum?

We know how to spot them, don’t we. We’re both so very clever.
For those that don’t know how to spot a right wing troll……
They are anybody and everybody who doesn’t agree with KARDNOS.
    Duh!

  78. MarksonofDarwin says:

    xtp:

    “KARDNOS,
I like that you put the rightists into thier place and so easily and quickly shut them down, but at some point you have to know you are simply feeding the trolls and I’m afraid, that alone gives them the ammo to complain to the mods about you, asking that you not they be banned.”

Dude…you are SO good at this! These “rightists” are so easy to shut the h*ll up! Serioulsy…you’re so smart and good and virile…are you sure you’re not the TNT’s favorite poster?
    You know….KARDNOS!

  79. theglovesRoff says:

    MoD is on a roll!

  80. Grade school out for the day?

  81. MarksonofDarwin says:

    Glovesroff,

We should all be cowering at the prowess of KARDNOS.

It’s so simple. I don’t know why anybody doesn’t see his shining skills at killing a thread! And he will be even more spectacular when he has succeeded in driving away any and all who want to take this forum seriously! What a glorious feat that will be….the forum will be dead! Who wants to just kill a thread when you can drive away anybody who can show you up for a fool. Just get them banned! Brilliant I say…

Well……there ARE some who smooch his behind, but really, he’s so smart that I’m sure that some of those sycophants that show up must have been pulled from his glorious nether… ah,…from his mind!

  82. MarksonofDarwin says:

    xtp,

    Ahahahaha!
I love the way you think!

  83. LarryFine says:

… and xring claims not to name call… par for the course.

  84. KARDNOS says:

Markson – would you have anything to talk about if you quit whining about me?

  85. theglovesRoff says:

I understand he destroyed another news media’s website from the comments I have read here. So why not put another notch in your belt, eh KARDNOS?

  86. KARDNOS says:

In case anyone is wondering, I’ve been busy producing CDs for a show this weekend.

Meanwhile, for the past five hours, I’m the topic of conversation.

The Conservatives will do ANYTHING to avoid talking about Paul Ryan’s little plan of killing Medicare that is unpopular with 80% of Americans

  87. KARDNOS says:

    gloveR –

One of the many personalities of Sybil of Olympia, huh?

Yeah…That newspaper is ruined. I haven’t posted in it for about 6 months or so and the moderators have to keep throwing people off the forum….

Many people report about it on a blog I moderate.

  88. theglovesRoff says:

    What about wienergate?

  89. LarryFine says:

… don’t worry toyotaman, no one was wondering.

  90. theglovesRoff says:

I wonder if LF will have to create a new name now after the snail gets done with him? You know with the TNT mods knowing his name and all?

Weak that they deleted they last comment from MoD. At least I was able to read it.

  91. KARDNOS says:

    Oh my!!!

    Someone’s comment got deleted?????

They must have broken the terms of service.

  92. theglovesRoff says:

    :-)

  93. LarryFine says:

    I doubt it.
The wallpaper poster’s claims of being an insider are folly. I’m not sure why the mod tolerates him. Maybe the moderator’s a little nit of a conservative and keeps the snail around just to illustrate a point.

  94. KARDNOS says:

You have to love the Conservative trolls…..they KNOW that the moderators of the News Tribune cannot do their job without someone telling them how…….

That little thought makes them feel good when a moderator has had enough and gives them the heave ho……

They can blame it on “Ida No”

“Why did your comment get deleted?”

    Conservative Troll: “Ida No”
