ISRAEL: U.S. support is in both countries’ national interest

Re: “U.S. shouldn’t meddle in other countries’ affairs” (letter, 5-26).

The writer was right on the mark.

I believe President Obama’s speech on the Israel-Palestinian conflict was a serious blunder. Instead of urging Abbas to directly negotiate with Israel, he dictates to Israel, on behalf of the Palestinian Arabs, that the borders should be based on the indefensible pre-1967 borders.
By doing so he emboldened the Palestinian terrorists whose declared aim is to destroy Israel.

I’m glad to know that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a rousing reception by members of Congress when he addressed them. This reflects the overwhelming support Israel enjoys from the vast majority of the American people.

Israel is the only reliable democratic ally the U.S. has in the Middle East. It must stand firm in not making any more one-sided concessions that will endanger its existence. The U.S. defense of Israel is in both countries’ national interest.
