TRANSIT: Nothing equitable about subarea equity

I agree with the writer that readers could use better education on Sound Transit funding, starting with the writer himself.

Funds collected in Pierce County are not all spent in Pierce County. The subarea equity provision of Sound Transit spending declares that Pierce County taxes must be spent on projects that “benefit” Pierce County.

It would be great if The News Tribune did a series on how Seattle contributes zero dollars to Sounder trains and buses that originate and terminate in Seattle. Seattle contributes zero dollars to King Street Station (considered “everyone’s station” except Seattle’s). Much of Pierce County’s money goes to such projects and services.

I would very much like to see Pierce County’s ST board members demand that Seattle fund its share of bus and train service that clearly benefits Seattle. Then we could focus Pierce County’s money on a system that has Pierce County’s cities as hubs.

Who would use light rail to get from Tacoma to Seattle, with dozens of stops along the way, when you can get there within an hour on current service? Let’s build a high-capacity system to get people from Lakewood to downtown Tacoma (currently zero express buses). Restore regular express service from Puyallup to Tacoma, Puyallup to Lakewood, etc.

And TNT, please educate us on subarea equity. It’s just not equitable.

    Pierce Transit is reimbursed by Sound Transit for much of the service that it provides for them.
