TACOMA: Parking and safety concerns at Cheney Stadium

We finally made it out to the new Cheney Stadium last weekend.

Upon arrival we were greeted by an attendant holding a sign: “Lot is Full.”

Across the street at the Fred Meyer and Milgard Breast Center, guards were on duty and threatening to tow any event parkers. We eventually parked at the Windermere Plaza, which also had tow signs posted but no guards. We then had to play Frogger to cross the busy street with no crosswalks.

After the game the trek back to the car was very uncomfortable. The exit road was dark, crowded with pedestrians and speeding cars.

Why were no stadium staff or police directing traffic so people could safely return to their cars?

The management of Cheney Stadium and the City of Tacoma must address the issues of parking and safety before someone dies. Why not broker a deal with the neighboring business owners to allow event parking in exchange for advertising at the Stadium? And how about a crosswalk or two and some illumination for the pathways?

  1. Why would you risk you and your familys lives to watch any kind of sports activity? To me that seems to mean you don’t value your family too highly. But that may be only one persons opinion.

Sounds like you were late getting to the game.

  3. Just don’t go if these are the conditions they expect you to tolerate when YOU are throwing money at THEM to attend one of their events.

Why should police be diverted from nightly patrol so you can run across the street to attend a sport event of your choice, blocks away?

Here’s a thought. Get to your event early enough to find safe parking for your family. Be a responsible father and husband. Idiot.

Take a taxi to avoid all the traffic and parking problems.
