TRANSIT: Light rail delay is no surprise

Re: “Light rail to FWay delayed?” (TNT, 5-19).

Why should Federal Way be angry? They supported the light rail by having the extension included in the $17.9 billion ballot measure.

But Federal Way needs to realize a few things.

• The extension was not promised.

• Federal Way is not not high on the “political heirarchy.” The higher the political power, the better chance you have of getting the money. They don’t have the “power.”

• They are dealing with an organization, Sound Transit, that is extremely inefficient and political.

Sound Transit is building light rail at a very high cost. They don’t worry about that. I was also wondering, since they are terrible at handling costs, how can they be so accurate about projecting a tax revenue shortfall of 31 percent from 2009 to 2023?

Sound Transit is also saying that the Federal Way extension may not be completed until 2040. You can be assured that the way Sound Transit takes care of taxpayer money, that $600 million extension will end up costing $4 billion to $5 billion.

So don’t worry, Federal Way, it will show up some year. We just don’t know when. That’s Sound Transit for you.

Sound Transit will never be completed. To do so would mean the end to all that tax money they are currently getting.

  2. taxedenoughintacoma says:

We are unable to finish any mega project in this state. We have regulated ourselves to a STOP.

Can anyone tell me a mega project finished on time and budget. The WSDOT will tell you that they can’t name one!!!!

  3. Parkland says:

The letter writer is correct. Although Federal Way residents and business owners think it’s completely hip to have a King County address, the beautiful people in Seattle, the east side, and the northern suburbs consider Federal Way greater Tacoma, which is sorta like how New Yorkers think of New Jersey.

  4. Ithappened2me2 says:

It doesn’t really matter, cause the world ends Saturday May 21 at 6PM……

  5. Publico says:

Hey Allen, do you realize we are still recovering from a very deep recession that was nearly a depression? It does have a financial impact on all the State and local agencies.
    Your reasons are pure nonsense.

  6. blakeshouse says:

light rail in this state has to be near the top of this nations worst boondoggles. It has provided a place for a group of nepotistic cronies to play at social engineering, model railroading, and waste BILLIONS of dollars. on a system that will never do anything it was touted to be doing in the region. The socialist / neo marxists who pushed this bottomless money pit can’t even claim, as Hitler did, that the trains run on time. They can’t even finish a section of track within yrs of the deadline

  7. GHTaxPayer says:

Light Rail is the liberal wealth-redistribution boondoggle that just keeps taking and taking. It’s always over budget and soaks up more and more taxpayer money. There is not one single light rail system in America that breaks even on rider fees. The very best are at least 35% funded by taxes, with most needing at least 50% taxpayer supplements.

  8. taxedenoughintacoma says:

GH Taxpayer is right, just look at the post office and amtrack and Pierce transit too.

  9. crusader says:

pierce county residents are such suckers. King County cover there liberal schemes alone – they need their dupes to the south.

  10. fatuous says:

“There is not one single light rail system in America that breaks even on rider fees.”

I think you can say the same thing about air travel. The taxpayer is spending around 16 billion dollars a year just for the FAA.

  11. fatuous says:

Crusader, I’m not sure what you mean.

Pierce county isn’t contributing to the King county light rail build. Federal Way is contributing, and I can see why they are mad.

I don’t know why they haven’t posted the 2010 subarea report.

  12. Publico says:

Light rail takes cars and pickups off the highways. It helps to reduce air pollution and it provides a mode of transport to those who have no other way. It is worth its subsidy as opposed to what some farms and oil companied get.
What else do you need to know?

  13. Ithappened2me2 says:

Light rail took peeps off of a bus and put them on a train. It didn’t take cars off the road because the light rail path was already served by buses.

The sounder heavy rail train does take cars off the road though.

  14. the3rdpigshouse says:

Maybe a Tim Eyeman initiative could end the funding for the lite rail fiasco??

  15. truthbusterguy says:

All this chatter doesn’t matter. They will build, no one will ride, we will pay the bills and vote back in the one that brought us this dumb idea in the first place.

WA State voters are stupid and the dems know it. They count on your hate for the gop while they stab you in the back. Wake up fools.

  16. 2040? Wow! Government run Obombacare is gonna be great!

  17. See what happen when you try to delay paying the RTA tax
