TPD: Rank-and-file officer would have faced termination

I have been reading these love letters for Tacoma Police Chief Don Ramsdell and feel it is good that there is so much support for the chief. At the same time I am perplexed by the ignorance of many of those letter writers.

The department’s manual covers discipline for various violations, and one  specifically covers deliberate deception by an officer. If an officer has been found to be deceptive – lying – there is harsh punishment, up to termination.

Integrity is the blood of law enforcement, and when the top cop circumvents that integrity, it cuts to the public trust.

Was Ramsdell deceptive? Through his own statements and that of the city manager’s reprimand, that is exactly the case. So why has Ramdell not received the same punishment he would have meted out to an officer for the same infraction?

There is no doubt that the citizens writing in support of Ramsdell would have been calling for the head of any other officer who had lied to protect another officer.

TPD has a standard that what is good for the troops is not necessarily good for administration. In my 22 years at TPD, I saw violations of law that were all swept under the carpet because it was done by a lieutenant or higher. Yet rank-and-file officers were suspended or fired for lesser offenses.

  1. blakeshouse says:

They may have TRIED to terminate a rank and file officer for the same offense but the union would have stepped in and not only would said officer not been fired but would probably come out with a promotion and raise to boot. They say you can’t fight city hall. What that actually means is you can’t fight against the public unions and win period. Get used to it comrades the socialists way of doing things is alive and well and getting stronger in this the union of soviet style counties of Wa.

  2. ItalianSpring says:

Blakeshouse- you are incorrect. The department fires people all the time (or forces them to resign) you just never hear about it.

  3. Parkland says:

Blakehouse, that’s a horrible straw man argument, and you don’t have a clue about the things that go on at the TPD.

  4. pazzo242 says:

Blaheshouse–guess what, you no idea what you are talking about. I am the letter writer and I KNOW, beyond a shawdow of a doubt that officers were forced to resign or sent packing. And as a former executive board member of the Tacoma Police Union Local 6 we NEVER tried, attempted or supported an officer who was found lying….that is NEVER!!! So please take the time to get your facts straight and you head out of the southern region of your anatomy.

I wrote the letter because of the complete inequity of what happens between TPD Admin and TPD Rank & File….it is BS at the extreme.
