SMOKING: E-cigarettes have positive uses

Re: “Apply cigarette ban to vaping?” (TNT, 5-5).

I’m having a very difficult time swallowing the efforts being made to hang the black cloud of “health risk” on electronic cigarettes.

Yes, I am a smoker – for more than 40 years. For the past 35 years at least, I’ve been making attempts to quit. For much of that time, I’ve tried to be a “courteous smoker” and keep the danger and stink as far as possible from others.

At this time, when tobacco smoking is so socially unacceptable – when many smokers are looking at e-cigarettes as a way to further limit the impact on nonsmokers and many hope they’ll possibly be the aid that can help us kick the addiction once and for all, here is the health department, making them out to be another attempt by some industry to drag our children into a life of addiction.

To me, this isn’t about rights. There certainly are those who use e-cigarettes as a “nose-thumbing” method. The majority, I am guessing, want to lessen the impact on our neighbors, use them as a stopping aid, save some money, etc.

Why on Earth would a public agency and newspaper want to put such a thing in such a bad light?

Because it is a stupid money making attempt to take advantage of people who are not tough enough to quit on their own.

And cars are a stupid money making attempt to take advantage of people who are too fat and lazy to walk places… plus they’re more of a threat to people’s health than e-cigarettes.

The point is, e-cigarettes aren’t harmful to anyone and, for now at least, they’re legal. Why would we make them illegal just because the county health director wants to be the dictator of behavior and one city councilwoman says they look too much like cigarettes?
