TACOMA: Public pays the consequences

Re: “Lies hurt, says city” (TNT, 4-27).

Our young mayor, fresh from ethics orientation, has now weighed in on the deeper subject of police conduct. It’s a pity the holder of what is essentially a ceremonial position has to be trotted out to run interference for the serial incompetence of such career bureaucrats.

The slight comfort I get from having learned that little Zina Linnik’s life ended relatively quickly and the ill-launched Amber Alert might not have availed in no way relieves our marginally competent police management from responsibility.

It galls us taxpayers that we will now be presented a bill both for the consequences of those same officers and their continued employment.

Soothing words won’t bring Zina back. Nor will they prevent the next incident that might be mitigated by a liberal application of an old adage: Stupidity should be painful.
