Re: “Stop cherry-picking alarming quotes from the Quran” (Leonard Pitts column, 3-29).
So much of what was said can be applied to Rep. Peter King, R-NY, and his ongoing witch hunt to seek the “traitors” within our country that believe in Islam.
So much like the 1950s McCarthy witch hunt for all those “communists” within society, King finds little more than his own selected, and convoluted interpretations of readings from the Quran to fortify his persecution and accusations against Islam.
Islam had the prophet Muhammad much as Christianity had the teachings of Jesus to follow. Jesus did not teach man to hate another for his beliefs. Nor did Muhammad. Their only teachings were a “pathway” to a better life here today, that could lead to a life of fulfillment in eternity.
Yet we are constantly barraged by one man’s interpretation of those word that disparages another man’s beliefs, finding support in selected, misconstrued writings within another’s holy script.
Wars have been fought through the ages by myopic perceived differences in one religion vs. another. They continue today.
Our president got it right some time ago he asked only that we end to choosing to persecute and castigate all those who call their God by a different name. Christianity remains…Islam will remain, but it is up to us to co-exist.
