Our politicians are planning to take out another loan this year for $1.65 trillion. This loan is “necessary” because our representatives can’t balance a budget.
Republicans have stepped forward and said “enough is enough”; we need to cut that loan down by $61 billions, and Democrats have said we need to cut that loan down by $10 billion. With the numbers that large, it’s hard to get perspective.
I’ll scale the numbers down. If the total projected loan were $100, Democrats would shrink that loan down to $99 and Republicans down to $96. In other words, do nothing.
Both parties are content to pile on more debt, driving our nation into the ground. Minuscule reduction proposals are met with disdain.
Sen. Patty Murray’s latest newsletter states that the Republicans “have proposed an extreme budget that would destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs, devastate workers and small business across the country, and threaten our fragile economic recovery.”
She is correct to a point. The Republican budget will do those things because the cuts are not nearly severe enough to get us on track, and her cuts will do just a little bit worse.
The bottom line is that the required budget cuts will be very painful for everyone but are necessary in order to put our future on a firm foundation. I believe most leaders who say otherwise do so out of economic ignorance or selfish political intent. In either case, they are sacrificing our future.
