TACOMA: Mayor fails her constituents

Re: “Strickland shows common sense” (letter, 3-12).

The letter writer could not be more wrong about Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland. The most crucial point that people in Tacoma and Washington state need to know is that Strickland has put thousands of jobs in our region in jeopardy. She did this by meeting with the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, also known as Comac.

Ron Chow, one of her campaign contributors who also paid for her travel to China, set up a visit to Comac in China. Here are some facts about Comac I found in two minutes on the Internet: “Shareholders include the Chinese central government and the municipal government of Shanghai. This Chinese government-owned corporation will specifically try to design and attempt to build large passenger aircraft with a capacity of over 150 passengers to reduce the country’s dependency on Boeing.”

Orders from Chinese airlines are a big part of Boeing’s business as well as all the companies that subcontract out to Boeing all over the state of Washington.

Strickland could have found this information as easily as I did and made sure via the city’s attorneys that it was wrong to have certain travel paid for by a campaign contributor.

The letter writer uses terms such as “committed leader,” “common sense” and “breath of fresh air” to describe Strickland. She has demonstrated none of these qualities and should step down from office or be recalled.
