CONGRESS: Pay raises are relatively modest

Re: “Murray says end automatic pay raises” (TNT, 2-17).

The “automatic pay raises” sound alarming until one does the math. Congressional salaries have risen from $133,600 to $174,000 over 13 years. This raise is less than 2.1 percent per year.

I am not saying that members of Congress don’t make plenty or that it isn’t a great idea for them to forgo raises. I am saying that The News Tribune shouldn’t run such alarming headlines when the news really isn’t news.

  1. And I say if the pay federal employees is frozen for 5 years Congress should not get pay raises either.

  2. JudasEscargot says:

    amen, xring.

Make Congress take days off without pay. Make them take pay cuts. Cut their benefits.

  3. JudasEscargot says:

    How was the headline “alarming”?????????

I smell Dino Rossi hiding behind Julie.

  4. uratroll says:

Wish I had the power to vote myself a raise. Been three years, no pay raise and an increase in medical costs. Not to mention the increase in fuel and food prices and, of course, property taxes!

  5. Roncella says:

Julie, When you look at all the benefits that the congressmen get along with their 174,000 salary, special health care full retirement after only serving only one term, they are way overpaid already.

  6. lawrencejprice says:

$174,000.00 salary, free health insurance for life, over the top retirement and what do they do instead of solving the budget crises? Take next week off… nothing important to do, after all those promises of how things were going to change after the last election… What a load… There are some really serious problems needing a solution now. Step up, roll up your sleeves and get it done!! or step down…..
