VOTING: County Council should heed citizens

Re: “Hands off our polling places, county tells state” (TNT, 2-2).

I was more than a little dismayed to read about County Council members using the language of demands – in this case, that the state stay out of the council’s business regarding the vote-by-mail decision.

I thought the council was constituted to do the people’s business, and while I understand that governments must sometimes make unpopular decisions, the council’s defiant retaining of polling places is both unpopular and unwise.

I say unpopular because the people have voted with their feet (pardon the pun) in favor of vote-by-mail. More than 80 percent of ballots cast in recent elections have been by mail. And registered mail-in voters participate at nearly twice the rate of polling place voters.

I say unwise because in the current budget climate every penny counts, and the per vote cost of administering polling places is about twice that of vote-by-mail ballots.

Voting by mail makes good sense (sorry; another pun).

The Republican Dream…..to go back to voting at poll places only. Makes it tougher for middle class and working people to vote. If you catch my drift.

Sorry CJ, but I don’t catch your drift.
Why would it be tougher for the middle class and working people to vote at the polls? They’re doing it now.
You really need to make a trip to a polling place on election day and see who is there casting their own ballot. It certainly isn’t the lazy people, nor is it the people who trust someone else to cast their ballot for them.
Also, who said absentee balloting would be eliminated? People just want the option to vote as provided by both Federal and State Constitutions.
