Not one of the two articles and three letters published on your opinion page today (1-12) could bring themselves, without qualification, to put the shooting in Arizona in meaningful perspective. Each stated that the shooter was crazy and not motivated by political rhetoric but …. (a long list of perceived irresponsible political tactics of the opposition).
The Founders understood human nature. Our Constitution effectively considers the major flaws that all humans must learn to manage if we are to live humanely together. This is essential for meaningful interaction. All the checks and balances that guide the process of change are designed to provide pause so that meaningful discussion can take place and critical decisions can be made for the good of the country, not political advantage for groups or individuals.
The senseless killings in Tucson were the result of a deranged mind. What difference does it make what set of doctrines he incorporates into the tangled maze of his troubled psyche; his actions were crazy. They exist exclusively within the context of his world view.
For individuals to even tangentially attempt advancing their political views or distaste for opposing positions and tactics is deplorable. Our focus should be on strategies for healing and putting in perspective this tragic event.
Where are the voices of quiet understanding at times like this? We’ll need them on both sides of the aisle if we are to move beyond the chronically adverse political environment that continues to accelerate in its partisanship.
