BOEHNER: Man up? Just shut up

Re: “Boehner needs to man up” (letter, 1-10).

My hackles raise whenever I hear the stupid phrase, “Man up.” What does it mean, other than something disparaging to women? Or is it possible for females to “man up”?

We never hear “woman up.” Is “man up” strictly a male, testosterone, warrior, hero thing, allowed only to the “superior” gender? You know, the gender that has done such a fine job wrecking this planet.

Yes, behind the phrase is a not too subtle belittlement of the little lady – the poor, weak, feminine, emotional, discombobulated, easily flustered and wholly cowardly female 51 percent of the world. It’s a spit in the face of the strength and bravery of females since time immemorial.

We need not even think of Boudicca, Joan of Arc, Catherine, Elizabeth, Theresa, but rather consider our own mothers whose grit, determination and pain tolerance in passing us through the birth canal shamed many a tottering husband swooning out at the sight, or thought, of it.

I applaud John Boehner for showing some emotion; it makes me think he might be one of the few conservatives with a heart. Alas, brains also seem to be sorely lacking on that side of the political divide. As Exhibit One I submit those who so loosely throw silly, disparaging phrases.

To those who suggest that someone “man up,” I say shut up. There is nothing inherently strong or tough about men. Better to be specific in whom to emulate. How about “Alexander Up” or “Joan Up”? Now that at least makes sense.

  1. I love it Annie. I’ve often thought the same thing.

(be careful, due to recent news events I have noticed there’s a few that post here that will draw a correlation between your name and a gun, which may lead them to make other assumptions about you and/or your motives. They could even accuse you of being in the TEA party.)

  2. “man up” is really quite sexist…..

  3. BlaineCGarver says:

Geez…another Socialist Man Hater. I hope her hate speech doesn’t drive some insane woman to mass murder men…..

  4. Good letter. I agree. its a phrase that carries with it a lot of baggage that should be left behind with all of the other ways we men hide that we are really the weaker sex. That’s why we’re so afraid of women being truly equal, because they really are smarter, more thoughtful and they outlive us.

  5. “Man Up” is the slogan for the Lakewood Police Department. Maybe they are fond of the term because it hypes up their cops to believe that they are truly men.

Other than that, why would they (or anyone) say “Man Up” so many times? Do they have mommy issues? Do they have women issues? Are they feeling their feminine side?

Hmmm… Let’s “Man Up” and ask them. :)
