MULTICARE: After layoffs, are pensions next to go?

Re: “Millions for Multicare CEO” (TNT, 12-21).

Diane Cecchettini’s salary and benefits package would go a long way toward paying the wages of 18 nurses who have received layoff notices from Multicare.

In recent contract negotiations, nurses have had to fight for guaranteed meal breaks during their eight- to 12-hour shifts. It appears that pensions will be one of the next benefits Multicare will attempt to eliminate. Some employees have been notified that their pensions are only guaranteed through 2011.

It might be understandable if Multicare were in financial difficulties, but that doesn’t seem to be the case, given Cecchettini’s more than comfortable salary.

    Multicare employees – wake up!! Private industry has been eliminating the corporate retirement system for decades in favor of the 401 plus corp match concept. Join the rest of the world!!!

    Your right , private industry has been pushing hard for 401k plans and look what happened to them in 2008, they crashed and became 201K’s. That just so happens to be the same year that Ms. Cecchettini pulled in over 5 million. Just because corporations are trying to wriggle out of their commitments to the communities that make them millions doesn’t make it right. The rest of the world?? What are you, an economist? The very term 401K comes from the United States tax code. Your world sounds pretty small.
