WIKILEAKS: Nothing’s changed; power still corrupts

Re: “Russia calls Mafia statement nonsense” (TNT, 12/3).

Well, at least the WikiLeaks revelations have demonstrated one sad thing: Human nature doesn’t seem to improve over time. The only thing we learn from history is that we don’t learn from history.

Whether it’s Putin in Russia, Karzai in Afghanistan or the politicians of (fill in the country), Lord Acton’s observation “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely” is applicable.

There’s a reason that quote has such staying power and often bears repeating. It’s as relevant today as it was in 1887.

  1. aislander says:

Our Founders were well aware of the flaws in human nature, which is why they set up a governmental system designed to counter it, and an economic system calculated to benefit from it…

  2. beerBoy says:

ai – where, exactly, did our Founders set up the exact economic system that we “enjoy”?

I understand that the Constitution does extend and protect property rights but there are many things in corporate structure that developed after the Constitution. And there really is no indication that the Founders intended fiction entities (domestic and foreign) to enjoy the same rights guaranteed to individual citizens.

  3. bandit101 says:

Norm – You got a better idea???

beerboy – Why don’t you do your usual thing about colapsing all the big business so you can finish off America. That’s what you want, isn’t it? America to fall dead?

  4. sumner402 says:

The right and drudge are just pissed the leaks story didn’t gain traction.

  5. ThinkerDem says:

There is NO evidence the WikiLeaks disclosures have caused any “sources” or “contacts” to be harmed. What they HAVE done is blow a hole in the self-righteous hypocrisy of “American Exceptionalism” by exposing what many of us know, but few will admit: Our diplomats spy, just as other countries’ diplomats do and our presidents ALL lie to us about the reasons for involving us in wars, yes, including Pres. Obama. I recommend reading “War is a Lie” by David Swanson, the journalist who exposed the Downing Street Memos disclosing the information that the “facts” were framed to fit the Bush plans to invade Iraq from day-one of his administration.

  6. ThinkerDem says:

PS That would be well BEFORE 9/11.

  7. bandit101 – in what universe does giving tax breaks to corporations who outsource jobs support America?

  8. And…..I asked for specific references in the Constitution to support aislander’s (who is an “originalist”) claim that the Founders set up our economic system.

You respond with an attack upon my patriotism. aislander hasn’t responded.

Again – where in the Constitution does it state what our economic system should be?

You are now invited to lunch with the Nifty-Fifty group. lol
