In the Tacoma School District, Lincoln Center has been making huge advances with their kids, yet you hear more about SAMI or SOTA.
There is this feeling of superiority that the teachers and administrators have because they work at the Science and Math Institute or the School of the Arts and get all of this publicity about making such a difference in the Tacoma schools. There is this districtwide opinion that these schools are the pride and joy of the district, and Lincoln Center is merely the younger sibling who can never compare to either SAMI or SOTA.
I don’t want to sound like I’m downgrading those schools in any way; I am merely pointing out that Lincoln Center doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Teachers at Lincoln Center work themselves into the ground to be there for the students and give them the opportunities they deserve, taking them on extensive field trips and burning the midnight oil to get grants so the students can do research. Where is their recognition?
The relationship between Lincoln Center and the other specialized schools can be described as cold at best. Why this hostility? Shouldn’t these schools be working together for the greater good, not competing against each other to see who can get the best state test scores, who can one up the other?
When did the fight for better education change to the fight for who is the better school?
